An Acronis miracle :-)

A friend had a WinXP Home system that had been upgraded from Win98SE that was running as though the 500MHz AMD K6/2 CPU was soaked in molasses. It took over 7 minutes to boot and did other things three to four times slower than other 500MHz systems.

There was no indication of a virus or spyware cause. Similarly, there appeared to be no hardware problems. Still, the system was horribly slow.

I imaged the hard drive with TI 8 (937) and restored the image to a PIII 866MHz system. The system wouldn't boot initially. It just kept rebooting spontaneously. I then did an upgrade in place, installed with his Windows XP CD to the same C:\Windows folder. That retained all the data and applications, and the system ran at normal speed - much, aster than on his machine. I tried the same upgrade in place on his system, and it had no effect. I gave him the PIII 866 system.

I then did a clean reinstall of Windows to his AMD K6/2 after re-FDISKing and formatting the hard drive, and it runs at normal speed. Apparently, there was some software problem and the hardware is fine.

Oh well, what end well is... uhhh, fine.
