    I don't understand the hatred towards Norton. Well, I get it but people could try to focus on their current products (2010 Norton products were good too).

    I haven't read a single valid point in this thread that shows that Norton is going downhill. So many independent tests with very good results for Norton, coupling this with the 2010 line it's weird that people keep on riding the anti-Symantec train.

    You can take this comment as fanboy, etc. For what it's worth, I like to change AV's from time to time and not sticking to the same.

    Having said this, I do want one thing from Avira: that they seriously improve their bug handling on their software. V10 started on the wrong foot and worse than that, the time they took to solve some critical issues. It annoys me that I still have to disable Webguard just to use Chrome or Opera.. no other AV I tested behaves like that, and Avira's response: push it to SP2 ( http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=32817 ).

    Avira's software was (and is) all about no kinkles and just simply working and being the best at it, no hassles and fast as hell. It's still at the top but has AFAIC deviated from it. I still have faith on them :)

    My Predictions for 2011:

    - Norton going strong at the top;
    - Avira with it's stellar detection engine but searching for redemption from 2010;
    - Kaspersky, always one of the safest bets. Don't think they'll keep having the same buggy AV's this year around;
    - ESET ditto for being a solid pick;
    - MSE remaining as the nr. 1 pick for free AV's;
    - Avast keeping their track as a good bet for free AV's. Still won't consider them a good choice on the paid AV's market of 2011.

    In 2011, I predict that Webroot will fund the inclusion of Prevx in independent comparative anti-malware assessments, so that empirical evidence to strengthen (or weaken) the competitive marketing claims of Prevx will finally be created.

    I think they will rather include a Webroot security suite which will include Prevx 4 techniques + Webroot components (which are basically Sophos and Privacyware if I remember correctly).

    Norton and Avast will improve.

    Kaspersky and Eset will stagnate.

    Mcafee will continue on its downturn.

    Finally the drama will continue with Comodo.

    If you had posted this a year ago as 2010 predictions you would have been right. :D

    I guess we'll see if 2011 brings us more of the same.

    Comodo should hire another AV engine - the rest of Comodo is great :)

    Not all AV have BB and/or HIPS, I'm not speaking of EMsisoft... I'm just taking about AV's in general.

    I believe security companies will implement Sandboxing more than
    its done at this time. Sandboxing is the future and it will be used
    more and more because it works and its easy to use.

    SuperAntiSpyware 5.0 will hopefully be released this year. With improved real-time detection that is comparable to it's on demand detection.

    Ok. My serious predictions:

    1. Huge increase in malware for mobile devices. We will see lots of acquisitions in this area.
    2. Huge increase in volume of digitally signed malware
    3. Innovations in malware design to allow malicious drivers to load into the 64-bit kernel
    4. Reputation systems like those of Symantec's Insight will get attacked, either via DDOS or through some kind of gaming.
    5. Might see some interesting hardware innovations in security, though they might be targeted at the corporate space.

    Noob will continue being a Noob :D Weeeeeeeee

    -Norton will keep it's recent good performance.
    -Avast! will continue to satisfy with their freebie and improving their V5.
    -Comodo will get in some troubles as always, but their HIPS, Firewall will continue to shine (Well at least for me :D)
    -G-Data might bring some upgrades into their suite (Better BB, resource optimization)
    -EAM topping lots of tests and one of the favorites on demand scanners
    -PCAV will improve slowly.
    -ESET Seems like they're not trying enough and loose another step.

    This are the ones i can think currently

    sandboxing allows applications to run its instructions and changes in an isolated area
    Anyway, a scan is required to perceives what changes are malicious and what are benign.

    Intego VirusBarrier X6 will still be the best Mac AV out there and a very uniquely designed AV program. Hopefully X7 will come out in 2011.

    Sophos for Mac free AV will be #2 just by the fact it has so many programs out there now that are calling home with heuristic hits.

    My prediction is that Comodo will release in 2011 the best antivirus product on the market and distribute it for free for millions of users.

    But it is probable that SAS might be the target of takeover by companies like Emsisoft, McAfee (Intel), or Norman, or even GFI (Sunbelt).
