YouTube is now the biggest threat to Twitch

When Amazon bought Twitch for $970 million in 2014, it was seen as the “YouTube of video games,” the only real live-streaming site for gamers in the West.
But there are signs that Twitch may soon lose some of that market dominance. Today, the company is locked in a battle for viewers with YouTube, Facebook Gaming, and Microsoft’s Mixer.

Take the blow Twitch took last Friday. On Jan. 24, gaming studio Activision Blizzard and Google announced a multi-year partnership that would make YouTube the exclusive live streaming partner for its esports leagues, including Call of Duty League and Overwatch League.
The studio’s move is the equivalent of the Superbowl and the Olympic Games making FOX their exclusive viewing partner for several years, shutting out all other networks.

The move means that Twitch is losing some of its top traffic drivers. The Overwatch League is the second-most-watched channel on Twitch, with 80 million hours watched since January of 2019, [...] Call of Duty [...] its live tournaments draw millions of viewers to the platform and break records for the category.

While Facebook Gaming and Mixer are both seeing increases in viewing hours, they and Twitch will have a tough job competing with the goliath of YouTube, which reaches 2 billion users a month.

Twitch has said very little about its recent struggles. “We love esports and will continue to invest in competitive gaming as part of our overall content strategy, and are committed to working with partners who are innovating and moving the industry forward,” said a spokesperson from Twitch in a statement to Quartz.

YouTube is using massive e-sports leagues to take on Twitch in big live-streaming bet

The company is no stranger to betting on talent. YouTube signed exclusive deals with big-name creators like Jack “CouRage” Dunlop, Rachell “Valkyrae” Hofstetter, Elliott “Muselk” Watkins, and Lannan “LazarBeam” Eacott. Each streamer brings in thousands of live viewers whenever they stream but also boasts millions of views from highlight compilations that are uploaded as VODs to YouTube.

Twitch may have led the way for e-sports viewing in the past, but YouTube is positioned to be a powerhouse for the various leagues.

All three of the major platforms saw increases in the amount of time people sent watching live streams, with YouTube growing from 293 million viewers in Q4 of 2018 to 334 million in Q4 of 2019. By 2021, research firm Newzoo predicts e-sports will have an audience of 557 million people, with many more being casual enthusiasts than diehard fans.

PewDiePie will be live-streaming exclusively on YouTube under a new pact.

To date, Felix Kjellberg — the prankster and videogame vlogger better known to fans as PewDiePie — has amassed more than 104 million subscribers and generated over 25 billion views to date, by far the most of any individually operated channel on YouTube.

“YouTube has been my home for over a decade now and live streaming on the platform feels like a natural fit as I continue to look for new ways to create content and interact with fans worldwide,” Kjellberg said in a statement.
“Live-streaming is something I’m focusing a lot on in 2020 and beyond, so to be able to partner with YouTube and be at the forefront of new product features is special and exciting for the future.”
YouTube’s live-streaming deal with PewDiePie comes after Kjellberg last year had inked an exclusive live-streaming deal with DLive, a service that had been promising better economic terms for creators than other major platforms.

For YouTube, bringing PewDiePie into the live-streaming roster steps up its rivalry with Amazon’s Twitch live-streaming platform. In recent months, YouTube has inked similar exclusive pacts with game creators including CouRage, Lachlan, LazarBeam, Muselk, Typical Gamer and Valkyrae.

Today, The Call of Duty League announced a host of mid-season update news, and among it all was an announcement for drops. To earn these drops, which will be for in-game items in Call of Duty Modern Warfare and Call of Duty Warzone, you have to watch Call of Duty League broadcasts on YouTube.

The drops will offer a variety of different rewards, including emblems and sprays. And all of the items will be themed after the Call of Duty League.
