Ouch, I used to hate those preventive underage working laws as well.

2004 IME has been heavy. 2005 was a lot lighter on my machine. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe there is a free upgrade to 2006 if you purchase the 2005 version now. I am not sure if it was for NIS or another brand. Sorry if I get your hopes up for no reason. BigC I believe has more expertise in this are dealing with Symantec-Norton products.

I always would use the latest build possible .. whether it is money related/security related.

I guess 2005 would be better then 2004 .. that's what i've heard and that's what I believe as well. programs do get better .. they can go worse too .. but norton/symantec at this time is not the worst choise after all ... I would never use it, never again but I heard it is better then 2 years ago...go for the latest build you can get :D

McAfee. Not being smart here. I have noticed that many customers that have Norton are running very slow due to the resource load the program puts on the system.

AVG is even lighter for slower systems with less memory.

Hi lavallie, welcome aboard! but off course you cannot compare avg with norton .. avg is free while norton is payware .. I would only hope that norton is better then avg lol those two programs cannot be compared imho.

    regards,

If money is an issue, look at Avast or AVG.

Don't forget antivir as an excellent free av. The only free av's I would recommend are antivir and avast. Avast offers so many features for an av that it is a good choice. It also has better detection than avg. Antivir has the best detection of the free antiviruses and is one of the lightest as well. Check out the beta version which is coming along well.

Just my advice, no flaming intended

If Norton was free, I would go for Norton, not AVG.
But Norton isn't free, so AVG would be my choice or another decent AV-freeware.
If you have Norton 2005 already, use that one, unless you find being lighter more important than protection, which sounds strange to me. :)

I have ran all 3 versions you mentioned before and it has been my experience that NIS 2004 is one you don't want. It is definately the heavier of the 3. NIS 2005 is surprisingly light on resources for what it does and actually while NIS 2006 is still surprisingly light to me, it is just a slight bit heavier in my experience than NIS 2005 was. Still not bad at all or a resource hog in any way but I think it is because of the AS functionality now present in 2006. I would say go for NIS 2006 if you can and if not the 2005 version is not bad at all either.

The new versions of Norton 2005/2006 even run lighter than mcafee
