According to THIS LINK Avast does. I would think there are others but can not name any right now.

Kaspersky 6.0 works under Win98, Also Avira does. Those are the two I reccomend.

The latest version of Avira does not support 9x/ME.

I second Dr.Web for this type of pc :)

I tend to give old pc's a doctor to look after them instead of some of the beefier 'uns :)

The only reason to run win 98 is because there is some application that is vital, and it does not run anywhere else. Win 98 machines should not be connected to the internet. They have that many vulnerabilities.

Thanks for you help. I never have a virus on this machine. Just feel safer with a AV then with none. XP is much more vunerable, at least AVG finds something now and then and nothing on my favorite old pc with 98.

Most virus varieties won't even run on 98. All designed for XP and up.

For Windows 98 I'd say Dr.Web really is the best. Others I might recommend are AVG 7.5 - but that also has limited functionality (no real-time antispyware scanning) on Windows 98 and support for the product only lasts till the end of the year. There are other AVs but IMO these two work the best on that OS :)

For a free solution I would recommend Avast! + SUPERAntiSpyware instead of paying for Dr.Web.

According to the AVG website, Windows 98 support ends in August 2008. Version 7.5 still works, but version 8.0 does not support it.

Yeh:-he could probably change his tower to one that'll run xp or vista!(Linux is an option:-but then 1/2 your apps wont run)
98Se is still a relatively good OS for a low spec PC,like most MS products it always was slagged off more than was really justified, just because it was a MS product!
I always likes Kav 4.5 on W98:-it ran very light and fast, and I still have the installation file, you can have it if you PM me,but don't know how you'd be fixed for a licence to make it run(sure kaspersky UK would help out),some of the malware that is a threat to XP/Vista wont affect W98 so it should offer adequate protection for the threats you're vulnerable to
