If this is true, I would sell Microsoft stock short immediately!!!

Yes they're creating more reason not to migrate rather to migrate ... DRM controls, product cost and now rather extreme license restrictions.
I certainly feel a big flop on coming. :ninja:

    Hello,
Guys, the article I promised about Vista will not be happening then.
But I think the conclusions are unequivocal.

Well now at least it has been really established as to who's security Microsoft is really interested in.

Crappy part is all machine manufacturers will have to put the darn thing on there systems. Buy now.

they made an error in the story, it's FUD. i'm sure the new licence is better then the old in regard to VMs, i've heard that afew times, but i don't know why i can't remember.

Thanks for the update Ice. ;)

But it doesn't alter the real issue, which is quite inhibiting :( ...

I wonder if this is for the retail package, or just OEM?

The article refers only to the retail versions ... so the OEM versions would be the same or even more restrictive.

    Hello,
Ed's blog has not changed yet. So I'm wondering who's quoting who.
As usual, a quagmire of confusion.

They're trying to see how much they screw their customers and get away with it.....It won't be too long before it backfires, regardless of Vista's success. MS is pretty much walking a fine line when it comes to Consumer Protection at the moment, just a few more years and we'll see :D

And besides, Macs are now slowly becoming viable for the mainstream :)

The sad part is that the *average user* meekly accepts this sort of thing, if they even know that it's going on. Only a small but vocal minority raises a row, which M$ blithely ignores. And the vast majority of people just keep right on paying good money for the privilege of being messed around with.

Probably have to call MS to get your machine reactivated.

I have been running the beta versions of Vista and hoped to purchase full retail soon after release.
I don't regret actually beta testing as it has opened my eyes to a lot I didn't see before and it has made my mind up not to be first in line for any purchase of Vista in the near future.
I can never say 'never' but I know for sure there is no point at this stage as there is too many new hardware devices planned for the future which would mean a possibility of having to purchase another license if I upgraded my hardware over the next year.
I am disappointed that not only do we pay more in the UK for the actual OS but the fact the license has been so limited I will definitely make sure I am happy with any computer hardware coping before even contemplating Vista now. It is the home user/enthusiast who are going to suffer most....sad but it would be a statement if the expected sales fell below targets if everyone was aware of the rigorous checking Vista will try to accomplish now - disappointed but relieved I found out before any purchase. I do not like this 'mistrust' shown towards genuine users :'(

From what I have read, the suggested retail $$$$$ will sure be prohibitive as well. Even with multiple vers. of Vista available it would seem that the only one priced to compare with current OS prices` is so stripped down that all you are really getting is a re-wrapped XP branded "Vista"*. Do not know about anyone else, but paying big $$$.$$ to only restrict myself further in what I am allowed\able to do with legally purchased software just makes no sense to me.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/editions/business.mspx

Vista Business, Suggested retail price for full package product, $299.00 USD. Suggested upgrade retail price, $199.00 USD.

Vista Enterprise, The Windows Vista Enterprise edition is only available to Microsoft Volume License customers, it is not available for retail purchase.

Vista Home Premium, Suggested retail price for full package product, $239.00 USD. Suggested upgrade retail price, $159.00 USD.

*Vista Home Basic, Suggested retail price for full package product, $199.00 USD. Suggested upgrade retail price, $99.95 USD.

Vista Ultimate, Suggested retail price for full package product, $399.00 USD. Suggested upgrade retail price, $259.00 USD.

Of course all this is subject to change before final release.

On a Tech related note for all us "Geeks of the family"(those of us who seem to be on 24 hour help desk\in home trouble shooting duty for Family and Friends). Can you imagine the headaches this will cause when they go out and purchase it for a under powered PC. Or worse yet, one of their "friends" loans them the disk and do a dirty install........:(

If only my dial up modem will work with linux, I may not use Windows as my main OS.
I wish Apple allows its OS to run on non-Macs and MS is going to regret for its policies. A healthy competition is always good but here there is no competition at all. Imagine if u don,t have AMD, how Intel would have performed.

Something to keep in mind, unless MS has changed it sense XP. The upgrade vers. disks carry the full vers. If you f\disk and run it as a clean install booting from the Vista disk, it should ask for a disk containing a previous vers. of windows. (I have done this with an XP upgrade disk using a Win95 disk when asked.) Please be aware this of course has not been tested with a Vista upgrade disk. Your mileage may vary. ;)

Plenty of serial modems that cost far less than Vista, an example of one of the Best for Linux

... besides an easy hardware change/external addition, you can probably find a way with your current modem - where there is a will there is usually always a way. Nothing is impossible, either way you have possiblities. :)
