I've been reading the recent comments about SUPERAntiSpyware's splash screen in here https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=169440 and last year about AntiVirs.

Well yes i'd rather not see them too, and have managed to get rid of a few on all of the ones i could on my software. But for crying out loud, when you're getting a product for free, and some of them are very good indeed, and with updates and daily malware definitions thrown in too, is seeing a splash screen for several seconds too much to put up with for ALL you are receiving for FREE !!!

If i was a vendor and kept hearing these type of trivial complaints, i'd stop the free software and ALL that goes with it in a flash. Don't people realise that writing software takes time, as does analysing malware and coding the definitions. Not only that, but they also provide bandwith for their websites to be viewed, and for downloads of the software and definitions, and staff and premises and bills to run them etc etc. In case some people don't know, that all costs money, and don't forget the staff like to eat etc as well as you do, and they have homes and maybe families to support and ALL that goes with it. You know, just like you need money to pay all your expenses every month.

Jeez some people, what are they like ? Get over it, and quickly before they change their minds, and you lose out.

In the software world, there is freeware, shareware, and payware. Splash screens, I think, reside in the shareware realm (it is not paid nor is it considered completely free). Certain free programs have tie-ins with paid version programs. So if you want to completely rid yourself of splash screens, you will have to strictly use the freeware programs only.:ninja:

If I disable the FirstDefense-ISR Splash Screen, I kill its main feature : Immediate System Recovery.
Sometimes splash screens are very useful and sometimes annoying, like the Prevx1 splash screen.
You have to live with it, once you approved the software on your computer.

I utterly agree with you StevieO. People are just getting too spoiled. Don't use the software if splashes annoy you so much, or PAY FOR IT! I am annoyed by people who are annoyed by splash screens. Bubba said it all in that thread, and Nick is totally right :thumb:

    All the best,

I don't follow your logic. Some for pay software has splashscreens that you can't disable. Some freeware have splashscreens that you can disable. What does cost of the product have to do with the fact that splash screens are a nuissance?

If you followed the thread, then you would know that the product was actually praised in every post. But because a product is free, does that mean that it can't be improved upon and that you have no right to provide consumer feedback both good and bad?

Cost of the product has been introduced as a smokescreen in this discussion, It is not relevant.

    @ ejr

    No smokescreens here !

I'm talking about people who bitch about having to put up with seeing a splash screen for a small amount of time in FREE software.

Forget about paid products, that's a completely different matter altogether.

The cost of the product, ie FREE = NO cost to us, has everything to do with it. I gave lots of reasons on how vendors of FREE software have to bear ALL the costs associated with providing and supporting EVERYTHING concerned with them. That does cost money, and who pays for ALL that, not you or me, but those vendors who are generous enough to do it.

Some operations are run by maybe one or just a few people, and some of them do'nt even have ANY paid products for sale. So they are 100% subsidising the whole thing out of their own pockets, for our benefit. Some of them do ask for donations, but how many people actually bother to donate, hardly any !

Even those who do have one or more paid products, still have to provide ALL they do so we can have it for FREE. There is no magic free bandwith, or coding hours, or support time etc involved, it ALL costs them in many various ways, including money.

So if people can't tolerate a few seconds of splash screen in return for ALL they get, then i say they don't deserve it !

For freeware programs, as long as it's not too intrusive (like SAS's), then I have no issue with them. However, all paid programs should have the ability to disable splashes.

(In my case, I usually do not disable splashes from my security software. Splashes let me know they are loaded, up and running.)

In my opinion, you are still making one issue out of 2. Those 2 issues are:

    1. Are splash screens useful, necessary or just a nuissance? and

    2. Do people that use free software have the right to complain and or to provide the developer consumer feedback?

Now, I choose to run SAS free on my machine so I will put with the irritating splashscreen. But I won't forfeit my right to give the developer a chance to make the product better by providing him with useful, real world, consumer feedback.

SAS chooses to provide a free product. Are you saying that because they have opted to provide this product for free, that nobody has the right to speak their opinion as to how to make the product better? That stance seems short sighted in my opinion.

Furthermore, can anyone tell me what good a splash screen does? If the program is already on my computer, and I choose to use the product, do I really need to be reminded about what product I chose to download, install, and run? I fail to see what benefit splashscreens provide to anyone.

ALL THAT SAID, I think SAS is an excellent program (and I have pretty much stated that in nearly every post I have ever made about the product). So we may just have to agree to disagree. I believe in the freedom of speach. I also believe in providing feedback to the companies whose products I use whether that product is free or not.

Personally I am not annoyed by splash screens however I don,t like to see more than one spash screen on windows start up( from real time scanners).
I agree that all splash screens should have the option to be disabled( though personally I might not even disable it but many will like to do so).
As far as SAS is concerned, I will consider it as splash-ware and I agree that they have the right for it as they are providing it free. However I am not sure that fROm a marketing point of view, it,s a good way of advertising or not.
If some body does not like splash, he can get trial of pro version or buy the pro version, so all options are there.
Splash screen is a much little annoyance as compared to nag pop up( think of Avira Antivir classic) that nags every now and then.

Yeah the matter over splash screens really boils down to what you're doing. When i get ready to scan with a security product that has one i really don't even look at it because my mind is focused on getting the scan initiated and leaving it at that. Splash Screen recognition over.

The few other programs i use that display them i pay little attention to and some others i might even hack them to look better.
