I am surprised this has not been asked before as far as I can see. So what do we all think? Would an Anti-Spam forum be useful or just another yawn?
Hi Pilli! It might be useful to some users. Personally I found another solution how to deal with spam. I got three different email addresses. One for business, one for private and one for fooling spammers. If I'm not sure about the trustworthy of the company, I use the last email address. Suddenly spam occurs, because some of these nice websites sell their email database to spammers. If I receive too much spam, I kill the email address and open a new one. Simple but very effective! Think it might not be a bad idea; actually probably a good "door-opener" subject overall for people to begin learning more about overall PC security. I think spam is the most noticable problem lots of people have... And with easy to locate questions/answers on that subject in the forum it's possible lots of people looking for spam solutions will find it then start to learn other stuff
Patrice, I think your solution is used by many security savvy ppl, including myself. Perhaps I should have called the Poll "Spam & Email Security"? There are many sides to Spam. Consider the following: 1. The stand alone user 2. The small business network or home network with multiple addresses where regular changes of those addresses is not a viable option 3. Those of us with Web sites which include contact info' and who are "trawled" endlessly by Spam bots etc 4. Those that wish to use their own servers, where not just Spam is a security issue. I am sure others will suggest many other aspects I have not mentioned. Detox, Thanks and agreed, for many ppl Spam is becoming a real bane & pain. I believe a recent survey suggests that up to 40% of all email is Spam, looking at my inboxes I would say that that is a gross underestimate BR Pilli
Hi Pilli! I agree to what you said. There is certainly need for some people. If you would use The BAT as email client, you could already delete the unwanted mails on the server, so you wouldn't download it into your inbox. This is a solution many people choose. But it still doesn't solve the core problem, you're right. Regarding at the current law situation and considering that they always lack behind, we can give up this solution as well. So the only solution at the moment to fight spam, is either like I do or with special software. Even though they don't work perfect. And last but not least you can just accept such spams and put the sender straight ahead into your local spam list. Certainly not the best way, but at the moment, there is no better solution as far as I know. Regards! Patrice
SneakEmail&SpamBlocked.COM (was Re:Spam, Spam & more Spam!) SPAM seems to be of greater concern lately than malware --virals&worms-- among the "regular" folks using computers; it is threatening the usability of the one thing that they've learned to appreciate most: emailing family and friends (because who cares having to wade through 50+ mailbox stuffers, some quite revolting). having (just) 3 email address isn't enough, by a long shot, to cope anymore... I try to interest folks in using services offered by such as SNEAKEMAIL.COM (free, unique forwarding aliases, a new one for each registration/purpose, so you can identify and block the weasels), SPAMCOP.COM (free anonymous spam-fighting colaborative) and similar. Another aspect of the "email problem" is that most new users don't "start out right" (and never improve their set-up -- because it's a hassle, no doubt); not realizing that most are likely to change their ISP several times over the years, they nonetheless use an email address based at the ISP, not realizing/checking if, and what kind of forwarding service they can expect (NOT!) once they "move on" and abandon an ISP (or once it goes out of business or is sold or... proves to be flaky). EMAIL service is really more important in the long run than what type of connectivity one uses to get online, and it only makes sense to get EMAIL-service from a provider dedicated to EMAIL (who lives and dies by doing it well!) There are free ones, but ultimately this service is worth paying for (ad-free web-based services)... and at least *I* find it obnoxious and intolerable when the email I get from others) have ads stuck at the beginning (or end) of messages... TISCALI.FR is the worst of the lot so far, and I'm now blocking them at the router level and/or report all their traffic as spam). SPAMBLOCKED.COM seems worth considering using (the cheapest one for-hire that I know of); MYREALBOX.COM is a free service by Intel (cost- and ad-free), but it's a test-bed for their messenging service (or something) and sometimes service happens to be unavailable -- and who cares for email that one cannot get to sometimes (way too often) and can't demand more reliable service for (because it's "free" and "you get what you paid for"). And the politicians are gearing up to outlaw "evil" spam but/and "legalize" theirs (and religious, and non-profit spam).... and, just wait and watch the spectacle, tax and/or charge us for the "service" (by making you register addresses that you want protected from spammers). Its going to get ugly, and the lowest common denominator will be all we can expect to end up with if we are not very vigilant and pro-active in the matter...
will first you have to wonder what spam is to me spam is when you spam same person several times with the same message but if its a one time e-mail to several people then it not spam so long as that person dont keep e-mailing you lol over and over and over. but to tell you the truth it would be nice to have a black list of major spamers like the one guy that keeps wanting your bank acount so they can put money in it lol every one i know has gotten that one sevral times over also some newb frindly utlitys would be nice what works with juno or aol ect ect
Spam is the unsolicited "junk mail"or one way correspondence of the Internet sent to you by anyone just because they have your email addy, IM/PM access or the ability to access other forms of private Internet communications. It is an invasion of Privacy and done for many reason,Profit and Personal being the chief motivation. Delete it or ask them to stop are your first lines of defense. If that does not work. Put them out of business. Mass mailers are particularly offensive. To have a forum on the subject is a good idea. They have one at DSLR. I think our members would enjoy and participate in one here at Wilders.
