What the hell, this sounds awesome, why don't they implement this on every SSD? And with "they", I mean all SSD manufacturers.

Aaaannddd the race to bottom gets faster and faster. It's a marketing spin trying to explain why densities have become so high that they need a backup chip. The spare chip is there only because NAND flash wears out so quickly in it's current incarnation, TLC and QLC. If they'd stop doing that they could make reliable drives from the beginning. I mean 46% error rate on raw read operations is pretty lousy don't you think?

I don't thing consumers should care how drive works internally. Just imagine black box and talk about properties viewed from the outside. Reliability is one property and I don't care how they achieve it as long as they achieve it.
    Anyway interesting insight.

Or think of it as massive overprovisioning.
