Samsung launches high-capacity smartphone RAM built for 5G and AI

The Korean tech giant has started mass producing what it says is the industry's first 12Gb LPDDR5 for phones, and it'll also start the mass production of 12GB LPDDR5 packages later this month. Samsung introduced its LPDDR5 chip technology last year in hopes of providing 5G phones with a fast, energy-efficient RAM that can power machine learning and AI applications.

Like the LPDDR4X RAM, the component is built on Samsung' second-gen 10-nanometer chip. It was designed, however, to be around 1.3 times faster. In a 12GB package with eight 12Gb chips, the component will allow phones to transfer a whopping 44GB of data or around 12 full-HD movies, based on Samsung's computation, in a single second.

In fact, the conglomerate is planning to develop a 16Gb LPDDR5 next year for smartphones with even more advanced features.

Samsung’s Galaxy S20 might not have an exciting new design, but it makes up for its look with much better specs than 2019 flagships, including faster memory than before. In fact, the RAM used in the S20 will be faster than the memory in most laptops. The S20 will pack up to 16GB of RAM of LPDDR5 memory, which should deliver significant performance improvements over previous-generation flagships.

But the S20 phones won’t be the only phones to rock LPDDR5 RAM this year. They also won’t be the first. That title will go to one of Samsung’s biggest rivals in China, Xiaomi, whose next flagship is about to drop.
Micron on Thursday announced that it has shipped the world’s first low-powered DDR5 RAM, which will be used in the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 10 smartphone. The new RAM, Micron said, should help out with artificial intelligence (AI) and 5G tasks, the report notes.

The new RAM will be 20% more efficient than the DDR4x memory used in some of last year’s top handsets and up to 50% faster. When it comes to performance, Micron says the new memory will allow 5G smartphones to process data at peak speeds of up to 6.4Gbps, which should prevent 5G data bottlenecks.

Micron’s memory will be available in different capacities, including 6GB, 8GB, and 12GB, with speeds up to 5.5Gbps or 6.4Gbps, the company said. It’s unclear, however, how much RAM the Mi 10 series will feature.

Xiaomi Vice President Mr. Lu Weibing took to Weibo to mention that Xiaomi will be dual-sourcing LPDDR5 RAM modules for the Mi 10 from both Micron and Samsung. Dual-sourcing and even multi-sourcing components is common for products that are expected to have very high demand, enough to exceed the production capacity of a single provider — so the decision does not come as a complete surprise.
The variance in performance remains to be seen, but usually, there isn’t much perceivable difference in the end user experience.

Samsung today announced that it has started the mass production of 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM packages for smartphones. The company was the first to start producing 12GB DRAM modules for smartphones in July last year.

The new 16GB LPDDR5 RAM package offers speeds of 5,500Mb/s, up 1.3x from the previously fastest LPDDR4X package. Samsung also says that when compared to an 8GB LPDDR4X package, its newest 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM package offers more than 20% energy savings while providing twice the capacity.

“With the introduction of a new product lineup based on our next-generation process technology later this year, Samsung will be able to fully address future memory demands from global customers.”
While 16GB LPPDR5 DRAM packages are going into mass-production now, do not expect them to start showing up in smartphones before the end of this year or early next year.

Samsung is fond of bragging about its progress on memory chips, but this is one time where it made a particularly notable breakthrough.

The Korean firm has started mass production of 16-gigabit LPDDR5 mobile RAM chips that are billed as the first memory ever to be made using extreme ultraviolet lithography, which uses lasers and light-sensitive chemicals to etch silicon.
Aside from giving Samsung an edge over rivals, it reportedly clears a “major developmental hurdle” in scaling RAM — this could offer much more room for the industry to grow.

This also translates to some immediate real-world gains, as you might expect. The 6.4Gbps of bandwidth is about 16 percent faster than the 12-gigabit chips seen before, while a 16GB package of chips is about 30 percent thinner.

Samsung today announced the world’s first LPDDR5 DRAM chip for mobile devices. The new memory module is fabricated using the 14nm fabrication process, and it offers 1.3x faster performance and 20% lower power consumption compared to LPDDR5 DRAM.

In its press release, Samsung revealed that the new LPDDR5X DRAM chip offers a capacity of 16GB, and each memory package can have a maximum capacity of 64GB. The memory chip boasts of data transfer speeds of 8.5Gbps, which is 1.3x faster than LPDDR5’s 6.4Gbps speed. We expect to see the new memory modules in smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other devices next year, but Samsung is yet to share any details regarding the same.

Talking about the new memory module, SangJoon Hwang, SVP and Head of the DRAM Design Team at Samsung Electronics, said,

“In recent years, hyperconnected market segments such as AI, augmented reality (AR) and the metaverse, which rely on extremely fast large-scale data processing, have been rapidly expanding. Our LPDDR5X will broaden the use of high-performance, low-power memory beyond smartphones and bring new capabilities to AI-based edge applications like servers and even automobiles.”
