Restoring image to larger drive. 10 Hours!

I am in the process of restoring from an image. I am pretty sure that I followed GroverH's instructions: Select NTFS c: first, not Disk 1, then responded yes to restoring another partition or HD, then selected the full size of the drive 111.8 GB, then the MBR track 0. It seemed to start OK, but slowly & then when it did finally show progress it said 10 hours remaining! I am moving from a 60 GB to a 120 GB drive & I think the image file was 32 MB. The tib file is on a USB drive & the FDD is in a Toshiba laptop. What do you think I have done wrong?

Maybe nothing. I’ll assume you’re restoring from the TI boot/recovery CD. It’s possible that the drivers for the USB drive were less than optimal and the drive is running at slower 1.1 speeds.
Also, the ‘timer’ in TI has always been questionable to say the least. I’ve had backup/restore times jump from hours to minutes in the blink of an eye.

 

It's been over an hour & it now says 9 hours remaining. That is absurd! When I had restored from an image previously, by just selecting "Drive 1" it was very quick. I am redoing it because I didn't go through the steps to resize the partition for the larger drive. I don't understand why there is such a difference now. Something is not right!

 

If you've had better recovery speeds on this laptop before by checking Disk 1 instead of the C part first, then do it that way and then use the Secure Zone trick to regain the space on the larger drive.

 

I am not familiar with the "Secure Zone trick" What is that.

 

The bad timer may still be the issue. TI sees the re size partition as a second command and assumes as much time for it as the restore process. Look at the current operation bar and if it is moving along well then you know the re size operation will only take a few minutes. Acronis time estimate is just not taking that into account.

Thanks all. I am armed with a lot more info now than when I started this upgrade. The process did, indeed, take 10 hours! I am up & running now & I will do a backup of the new drive next. I decided to just let this thing run & see what happens & it worked! I will use different tools if I do it again, but thanks for all the support.

 

10 hours is rediculously bad performance. State of the art for backup software is around 1/2 to 2 minutes per GB for a restore. The Linux ATI uses to do system disk restores sometimes can't handle USB drives any better than what you have experienced.

What is Ti estimating when you don't change the size of the restore-partition?

 

You may want to use Mustangs scripts to make a VistaPE disk which will contain Windows drivers for USB. Search this forum for VistaPE and you find lots of information.
Mustang has written a easy to follow guide how to build a VistaPE disk here and Mudcrab has a illustrated guide here

 

I think it was 32 GB not 32 MB, but 10 hrs. is not an option for me. I will make another boot disk that uses windows drivers.
