#1 Does the exclusions section in "setup" on ERA pertain to scans as well as real time protection? If not, where can I add recommended exclusions from scans?

#2 Other than this - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822158 does anyone have any recommendations on what one would typically exclude from scans?

If you are referring to an On-Demand Scan then you would simply configure the scan in the Scan targets (step 12) , to not scan that file or directory. You could then save that configuration, push it out as a task or use it in a policy.

Here are some other Microsoft articles that may pertain depending on the role of your server. Including the article you referenced here they are.

So it isn't possible to do this natively in the configuration editor? I really would prefer to see *everything* in my configuration in the configuration editor... I don't like needing to make setting changes on a client - export those settings - import into a policy and assign it to the appropriate nodes.

Try this knowledgebase article. This was the one I meant to reference the first time. :)

Okay this is a KB on how to schedule a scan from the configuration editor. My question is about exclusions for those scheduled scans.

#1 Does the exclusions section in "setup" in ERA pertain to scans as well or just real time protection? If not, where can I add recommended exclusions from scans?

#2 Thank you for the answers about what to exclude... I appreciate the links.

Exclusions are applied by all scanners.
