Hi. I already have what I consider the "essential" security software on my system. I have Norton Internet Security for my firewall which also takes care of ads and many harmful scripts. I use NOD32 for my virus scanner and BoClean for my Trojan scanner. I have AdShield for popups and web bugs. I use AdAware and SpyBot, free versions, for Spyware. My question is this: I would really like to also start using SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard. But, I have an old, antiquated system using Win98 and even though RAM is not a problem since I added a bunch, I MUST carefully watch my system resources. Because of the way I surf and other needs, I also constantly have other major non-security software running at all times. Despite the bias that you all have for the two above mentioned programs, a bias that I believe is probably well deserved, if any of you are still running Win98, how do these two programs effect your systems performance? Honest opinions please, thank you. I also posted this question over at SpywareInfo since they developed one of the above mentioned products. Again, thank you.

    Hi Acadia,

Both SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard were developed by Javacool, which is also the reason for me to move this post to his forum.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Hello Acadia,

I also run Win98SE and must worry about resources. I use both SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster. When online, normally I have Zone Alarm, NAV, TDS, Port Explorer, Spyblocker, IDBlaster, SpywareGuard, and Goback running. As you probably know, a few of those apps have a pretty big footprint. I do not have any problems with this setup and I stay online several hours at a time regularly on the weekends.

By the way, SpywareBlaster will not be a factor. It does not have to be running in the background to do it's job. After initially running the program and setting your protection, you will only need to start it up to check for updates.

Personally, I don't think you have anything to lose by at least trying the programs and decide for yourself. I do not think you will be disappointed. HTH.

    Hello Acadia
As you see from our signature line below we use quite a bit of security as well all on 98SE. We are also using SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster and they use almost no resources. You may be interested in a tool called Process Explorer found HERE. It lets you see all running programs and their real-time cpu usage.

Yes, they are fine together, most security conscious folks do run both. They are like SpywareBlaster (which I have now downloaded) in that they do not run all the time, only when you bring them up, at least in the free versions. I am most impressed by SpywareBlaster and it's simplicity. Take care.

Hi Acadia. I'm running W98SE and use both
SG and Spyware Blaster along with so much other security software that I wouldn't be able to keep track of all the updates without the update pages here. Javacool is a genious when it comes to software that combines both simplicity and functionality. I also have to watch my resources but I'm running Rambooster. It seems to help keep the resource usage down along with freeing unused Ram at a preset level. You might want to give something like RB a try if your resources are dragging you down.

OK all, I've got my first question concerning SB. In the Tools area for the IE options page disabler, does that prevent home page hijacking or is that simply to prevent others who are using your pc from changing that setting. Thank you.

That won't prevent home page hijacking - just user changes. :)

For protection against browser hijackers, I'd recommend SpywareGuard which has a Browser Hijack Protection component. ;)

    Best regards,

Also tried SG but it unfortunately killed my System Resources. It ate up about 7-8 percent and that was with the Real-Time Scan turned off at all times. Actually I question if I even need the other program, SB ,since I have my firewall settings to kill all ActiveX automatically but since SB uses no System Resources I figure double protection won’t hurt so it’s a keeper. Next year when hopefully I’m finally able to afford a new pc (fingers crossed) with a modern OS I definitely will again download SG. Thanks to Javacool and all others who replied.

    Acadia.
