I need a simple piece of software like Toolwiz Time Freeze in order to test programs. Most important - the protection can be turned off anytime without asking to restart my system but still the changes made will be deleted. Thanks.

I'm not sure it exists. These programmes are referred to as 'boot to restore' for a reason. You can save a session with Returnil (and maybe Shadow Defender) but you need to boot to commit the virtual environment to the real disc. I would have thought the number of background processes being virtualised during an average shadow/virtual mode session would be high and unpicking and releasing them to the real OS mid session would be difficult but who knows........

Anyway you can instal some programmes inside a Sandboxie sandbox which will be gone when you invoke the delete command or shut down the sandbox depending on settings. Sandboxie by design blocks actions some programmes might need though.

It would be interesting to find out how it is achieved if you find a product that does this.

    Thanks

Wondershare Time Freeze can do that. When protection is disabled it will ask you if you want to discard all changes or commit all changes. Whatever you choose the system doesn't need to reboot. However you can't commit specific files / folders. It's just commit all or nothing. I'm pretty sure the program behaves like that, it's been a while since I worked with this particular software.

@ Arcanez, in fact it doesn't work like that :( - see picture:

In this point, Wondershare TF works like Toolwiz TF.

Wondershare Time Freeze protection initialization is mega-slow, and it doesn't work at on my brand new X79 system (Win Ultimate x64). RAM cache also doesn't work. I have 32 GB or RAM and I assigned a 10GB for the virtualization cache. I turned protection on and then started deleting files and folders and the first problem became evident: The Time Freeze cache usage bar remained at zero even after making big changes to the protected drive.

Before rebooting I chose NOT to keep the changes and rebooted only to find out that all changes were still there! Protection is on in name only. This thing just refuses to work on my system.

Apart from Shadow Defender (which is top dog), Toolwiz Time Freeze is a decent little app which will also use a RAM cache in a future version (they are working on it ATM). If you protecting an SSD, then a RAM virtualization buffer will save your SSD from a lot of unnecessary hits.

Using here 'Wondershare Time Freeze' in: Win XP, 32bits/Win 7 Home Premium, 64bits.
I can't confirm such behaviour in my both systems, definitely: it is working like a charm here in Normal Mode. The same with Toolwiz.
When using it in Buffer Mode (RAM based) it's in fact "mega-slow", but works well; I don't use that mode however.
Never that happened in my two Systems [I'm working daily with Protected Mode, Win 7, 64bits] . It is doing an excellent work without issues at all.

Wondershare TF is very stable here. I'm using Wondershare TF instead Toolwiz TF for two reasons: it can protect boot sector; and if chosen to start Windows with protected mode it does that before login (Toolwiz does after user login).

And because it's a stable application. [even when not updated some time ago, it's a solid and reliable program].

WTF has work very well for me, I use it for trying programs, not for security. I have never seen changes remain after rebooting. On my system (XP), my experience is different than yours, using the program has been very pleasant as things don't get slowed down at all, speed feels the same with or without TF. It makes no difference on what mode I use it neither. I have it on Buffer mode and works great for me.

I got no complaints about this program.

Just by rebooting the system without prompting:
    Wondershare Time Freeze
    Returnil System Safe
    Shadow Defender
    ...probably also in TTF.
Entering the virtual system...the same apps (except TTF) after enabling proper options in settings.
    One word to TTF...
"Toolwiz Care, it already supports that start the timefreeze protection automatically when Windows starts"

WTF works well on my laptop but on my Asus P9X79 pro Win7 x64 system it is just on in name only: I chose to discard changes, reboot, and the changes are not undone. It's really weird. Overall it's a great app to undo installs that don't require reboots, (at least for my laptop).
