Opera --> New Stable Version Released!

Misleading title, as to me this is a privacy flaw not really a security one...worth a read, though.

They have confirmed it's a known issue and they are working on fixing it.

It's hard to think of a VPN connection from just one browser as anything more than an encrypting proxy. It is convenient to have this in a browser but there is no way this is going to be a secure VPN connection.

There is a 64-bit version for Windows there as well. Is it just me or this is the first time we see such thing in Opera since they switched to Chromium? Didn't followed the browser updates for some time now, can't really tell if this is the first time for a 64-bit build.

 

It's not new, it's just limited to the developer branch.

 

The VPN in the developer edition works quite well. It passed some basic leak tests. Browserleaks.com and DNSleaktest.com were run on it. The developer build has its own configuration folder so it is possible to run both the regular Opera and Opera developer at the same time with the VPN turned on in developer while the stable build is using the normal connection. This is quite nice. I still don't fully trust the VPN but it is much better than the Zenmate browser plugin. If I want to call it an encrypting proxy, I have to say it is a good one that uses real VPN technology. It is worth testing a bit more.

 

I'm new to VPN and proxies, can you compare the Opera "VPN" with this stuff, see link?

Note that it states "Updated support for the latest Chromium/Blink release, version 50." But it is only the latest major version, not the latest minor stable version with security fixes.

And again not updated to the latest secure stable chromium version. Vivaldi has been doing better in this regard lately, and also faster with updating to new chromium versions with security fixes.

 

I don't know how long I'll be able to use Opera 12: I could switch to new Opera if at least I could move all the bars in the bottom of the page. I hate them in the top !

 

Give it a try and you will see but I bet eventually you get used to it. I was using Opera Presto for many years and I couldn't imagine a switch to Opera Chromium that is quite cut off of Presto features. However now I have to confess that I can easily live without all Presto customizations in such a degree that I don't feel a need to try Vivaldi.

 

Same over here, that's one of the reasons why I never could make the switch to Chrome and the new Opera. It's a shame that the developers of Opera didn't even bother to offer this. My advice to you is to check out Vivaldi. It's far ffrom perfect, but a lot better than Opera. I also hated the "Opera Crash Reporter" service that keeps getting executed for no good reason.

 

Thank you, I tried Vivaldi, but it hasn't all option of old Opera and, moreover, every time it fails the import of the bookmarks form Opera, both from the browser and from the .adr file. What about Slimjet ?

You can't expect it to have all of the options, since it's using another browser engine, same goes for the current Opera. But I didn't know about the bookmarks importing problem, perhaps you can try to import them for a HTML file? BTW, I haven't made the switch to Vivaldi yet, but I do use it to play Flash videos, Firefox always has problems with that on my machine.
