I hate to say this, but...

Upon receiving my e-mail confirmation of my newly matriculated status as a participant in this forum I discovered e-mail contained a little something more than mere salutations. Namely, a certain Outlook 'CR' Vulnerability, connoting a somewhat less-than-warm reception.

The email was sent from nobody@security.wildersecurity.com, with the subject "Welcome to Wilders Security Forums".

Needless to say, I am leaving all possiblilities open as they might pertain to the actual reason for this development and hope to discover one of them. At the moment, I cannot help however but to find myself somewhat disheartened by the little irony, given the name, WilderSECURITY.

Anyway, try to throw me a femor sometime if a cause is ever uprooted.

p.s. I would imagine an inspection of the headers would be in order. But upon further thought I reasoned that if a third party were able to actively harvest my e-mail address AS I submitted it (I don't recall the connection being secured) then they would probably know a little about forging header information too.

    Greetings EsA6,

I'm sorry, I'm having some trouble following exactly what the issue is that you are reporting here.

This forum does indeed send email to the address you enter into the registration form to confirm your enrollment as a member, and yes, that from information is correct...

The "nobody@security.wildersecurity.com" (single "s" and all). That is how it is set up at the present time.

Could you explain in more detail exactly what the issue is that you are seeing? I've just checked and the automated email seems to be going out both cleanly and accurately.

Edit: Also, what software alerted you to the issue? Was it an anti-virus alert? If so, what product? Perhaps you can forward your enrollment message back to us (to: webmaster@wilders.org ), with a note explaining what you saw, so we could take a look at it.

    Best Wishes,
    LowWaterMark

I am not sure what is this all about, but something about email address ? I use my POP3 account alot, that is because I pay for it monthly, so why not to use it ? Email client whatever it is, downloads all emails on hard drive....I don´t like it at all, so I got 2 different methods.....
    1. I use my POP3 webmail feature, offered by my ISP, OR
    2. Mailwasher or some other email header reader before downloading emails....convenient indeed.
I can not protect my email address ever was in use, just one time is enuff. All I can do is not to subscribe anything on that address IF not necessary to specify my IP address....(email is trackable afterwards).
You might better start using "mailwasher" feature, but please do not blame wilderssecurity for anything you get on your hard drive while connected on the net. If you got something bad on there, well...then you are in the right place to have the best help ever.

    friendliest ~Ari

We've received just one sortalike report: a false positive coming from the virus software in use on ev1.net. Oor emails are in plain text only. Sounds familiar?

    regards.

First, thanks for all your help guys.
LowWaterMark, I e-mailed you a copy of the e-mail(s) in question---and yes, Paul, it seems to be a wayward e-mail scanner at the ISP end of things. Although I will say that someone thought it would be funny to send me an actual virus after this string began(W32/Bugbear.b@MM virus imbedded in MyJobDoctor.com.exe) at the e-mail address I registered with and do not use for anything else...so I know we have to have at least one funny guy here with us. But I can see the previous problem was with the ISP and not WS :D
P.s., isn't it "Adiós", with the accent on the O? ;)

Glad to know we've sorted that one out ;)

    Sorry to hear so!

Well, since you've made sure in your profile to hide your email address, and your password is encrypted when logging in over here, I wouldn't point fingers to any member over here.

    True indeed.

    ...most probably ;)

    regards.

You guys are top drawer, so no dispursions of any kind were intentionally cast for the actual virus that was sent to me. Just meant anything is possible technically speaking and there are sure a lot of sophisticated odd-balls out there. But you are right about bugbear being quite random. I feel as if I need to offer a peace pipe, or a bag pipe or SOMETHING, but this forum is really great. Even on the WilderSide ;)

    Till next moment, Ciao bella

Could give smoke signals from your computer, agreed.
Maybe good for bag pipes or pipe bags.
And they spread pretty fast! knocking UDP 137 all over for a hug!
