NordVPN Expands Into File Encryption With NordLocker

NordLocker is a new file-encryption service slated to arrive this summer for Windows and macOS. "It secures the files stored on your computer or cloud with end-to-end encryption. This way, you can be sure that no one will access your data without your knowledge," the VPN provider said in a blog post.

Pricing was not announced, but NordLocker will work on an app, which will require a master password to access.
The company is marketing NordLocker as a tool that can work on top of cloud storage services such as Dropbox and Google Drive. So in the event someone gains access to cloud storage account, they won't be able to decrypt the information.

To protect the files, NordVPN is using the AES-256 and 4096-bit RSA encryption algorithms. The company is also promising to secure the files using its own "zero-knowledge encryption process," which means NordVPN itself will have no way to unlock the data.

NordVPN contacted us to announce the launch of a cloud storage service for NordLocker, the encryption tool they made available last year. This complements NordLocker nicely, as users will now have the option to also store their files on the cloud.

Users will now be able to simply drag and drop files onto NordLocker, and then choose whether to keep the encrypted data locally on their device or move them to NordVPN’s cloud. The company underlines how encrypting first and uploading second is a pioneering practice in the field since most other cloud service providers accept the user’s files first and then encrypt them on their servers.

The only downside was the pricing, which can bring hefty costs if you need to upload and sync a lot of stuff, but most businesses would find great value in the investment. However, there’s a free tier too, offering up to 3GB of secure cloud storage.
Since the files are encrypted before they are uploaded on the cloud, they will be locked and unreadable even if they are leaked.
