There are threads about the incremental backup size of version 9 compared to version 8, particularly after a defrag, being larger, but my question and concern relates to the backup size of version 9 consistently being 15% to 30% larger compared to version 7.x for full backups. I recently upgraded from version 7 to version 9 (build 2032) and usually do individual full backups of separate partitions under W2K, booting from a CD to do so. This problem includes partitions that do not have a swap file.

I have left the compression level at the default for both version 7 and version 9.

Is this a known issue? Will it be resolved in a future build or release?

To answer my own question after some research.

    Version 7 had four levels of compression: 1)none 2)minimal 3)normal 4)high.

    Version 9 has four levels of compression: 1)none 2)normal 3)high 4)maximum.

By default #3 is used in version 7, and #2 is used in version 9. So it's just different names for roughly the same compression and to make version 9 seem speedier, a lower compression is chosen by default.

Speed and size of compressed files are very close for both versions if #3 (normal) is selected in version 7 and #3 (high) is selected in version 9.
