After close to a year of rumors, Microsoft today officially announced Cloud PC, which is part of a new Windows 365 cloud offering from the Redmond firm, at its Inspire conference. The company says that Cloud PC is a “hybrid personal computing category” which “uses both the power of the cloud and the capabilities of the device to provide a full, personalized Windows experience”, remotely delivering Windows 10 and – eventually – Windows 11 to users across platforms from the cloud.

Microsoft says Windows 365 Cloud PC offers an “instant-on boot experience” that delivers the desired apps, settings, tools, and data from any device thanks to the cloud. This means that users will be able to access their desktops from remote locations without having to carry physical hardware, further helping the “hybrid” form of work that the firm says is becoming ubiquitous.

The service is built on Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), but offers per-user, per-month pricing, and “simplifies the virtualization experience”, says the company. It provides flexibility for businesses to also scale depending on their needs and leverage other Microsoft offerings, such as the Microsoft 365 suite of apps, Dynamics 365, Power Platform, and more from the cloud.

Microsoft launched its new cloud PC Windows 365 service earlier this week, and the company has already had to pause free trials due to demand. Windows 365 lets you rent a cloud PC — with a variety of CPU, RAM, and storage options — and then stream Windows 10 or Windows 11 via a web browser. The service reached max capacity after only a day of signups.

“Following significant demand, we have reached capacity for Windows 365 trials,” reads a statement from the Microsoft 365 Twitter account. “We have seen unbelievable response to Windows 365 and need to pause our free trial program while we provision additional capacity,” explains Scott Manchester, director of Windows 365 program management.

Windows 365 is only available to businesses right now, and there’s clearly been more demand than Microsoft had anticipated if the company has hit capacity issues after just a day of free trials. Microsoft launched the service on Monday, with per-user pricing that starts at $20 per month for one vCPU, 2GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and 12GB of bandwidth if you already have a Windows 10 license.

Although Microsoft announced the general availability of Windows 365 Cloud PCs just a couple of weeks ago, it has seemingly received an overwhelmingly positive response from the public. So much so that the company had to temporarily pause its trial program due to capacity constraints.

Given the interest in the product as well as the fact that it's a new SKU, Microsoft has now provided guidance about how organizations can secure their Windows 365 Cloud PCs.

First and foremost, it is important to know that Windows 365 Cloud PCs come pre-installed with Microsoft Defender and also utilize OS images which are automatically updated using Windows Update for Business.

Microsoft announced Windows 365 back in July, and it hit general availability in August. The company's virtualized cloud OS offering enables organizations to stream from Windows hosted on the Microsoft Cloud. This is a full Windows experience for each employee with personalized settings, apps, and data.
With the staggered rollout of Windows 11 beginning just a few hours ago (check out our review here), Microsoft has announced that Cloud PCs running the OS are now available in its Windows 365 Enterprise offering too.

For the uninitiated, Windows 365 is offered in two flavors: Business and Enterprise. The former is meant for smaller organizations with less than 300 employees who want a simplified way to deploy Cloud PCs. Meanwhile, Enterprise licenses are for bigger organizations who want to manage deployments with Microsoft Endpoint Manager and take advantage of integrations with other Microsoft services such as Azure. Windows 11 Cloud PCs are now available in this Enterprise offering.

For starters, Windows 365 is getting the Citrix HDX Plus add-on later this year. It will enable companies to support more endpoint devices, peripherals, and security policies, especially in bandwidth-constrained environments.

Although Windows 365 has been more business-focused up until now, Microsoft soon plans to release Windows 365 offering for Government Community Cloud (GCC) and Government Community Cloud High (GCC High) in the United States too. As the name suggests, this edition will be geared more towards federal employees and contractors.

Starting off with Windows 365, Microsoft has announced a new Windows 365 Government SKU geared to towards federal contractors and employees. It allows streaming of Windows from the Microsoft Cloud while meeting the security standards set by the U.S. government. Additionally, the Windows 365 app is coming to the Microsoft Store so you can download and launch it directly from the Start menu of the Taskbar.
Another update in preview is the Citrix HDX Plus add-on for Windows 365.

Talking more about Windows on the cloud, reports from the Update Compliance service are being moved to Azure Workbooks under a new solution called Windows Update for Business reports. This change will take place next month and should make the overall experience more modular and consistent.
