Malwarebytes Google Search Reveals Rogue Product Site


Internet users who perform a simple Google search for the Windows anti-malware software Malwarebytes may be redirected to a phony website that relies on the product’s reputation to advertise other not-so-friendly applications.

Malwarebytes’ CEO Marcin Kleczynski learned of these fake sites after instructing some of his acquaintances to go to the download website by performing Internet searches.

“Unfortunately, there exists a market where bad people benefit by preying on our users. They create websites which advertise that they distribute Malwarebytes and instead, download a product of their own onto our user’s machine,” he wrote.

While his company’s legal team tries to find ways to stop these malicious plots, users are advised to visit the website malwarebytes.org directly to prevent from ending up on who-knows-what location that does more than serve a fake product.

i like malware bytes and pleased they offer a new full version trial but is very annoying that when have the protected mode enabled it flags almost every site that even offer an ad. i tend to download my programmes from cnet as i get the option to refuse the offers that unerringly are offered though sometimes forced on you if you use other third party providers .I use malware bytes as is reliable when scanning for Trojans etc and will do so always.

The same thing was happening 11 months ago, and was covered quite impressively here at Wilders on this thread.
Then, as now, Marcin was very interested in taking down the offending site.

 

It's domain parking and typo squatters that cause these sorts of hijacks. A Hosts file or similar, helps prevent against this.

 

Sometimes, as in the case I cited in the thread from 11 months ago, an IP blocker will detect a malicious site and throw up a warning.

The irony in this one is outstanding.

By the way, I actually stepped upon the domain mentioned a few days before MBAM CEO wrote that article. I had intentions of writing a post here at Wilders with my findings, just like I did back then. The CEO beat me to it, though.

 

Unfortunately some of these domains are definitely tricky to take down. Luckily Steven has some very good connections .
