Having two of the best AV programmes has been a goal of mine for sometime. So I bit the bullet & bought a licensed copy of KAV, I already have NOD32.
I did not uninstall NOD32 but put it to sleep for a few days whilst testing KAV.
The KAV on demand scanner found a virus in an old email (,dbx file)in a zipped backup file dated 1999! No other scanner I have tried has found this file. I found that the on demand scanner did the most thorough job I have encountered so far in any AV product though also taking considerably longer & is very CPU intensive. So I have now scheduled it to run at a time when I do not use the PC.
KAV's resident scanner seems to effect my system speed compared with NOD's AMON so I switched KAV res off and now run AMon, I have not tried running both together as I think that would really cause a problem!
So I have the best of both world, there appears to be no conflicts and I am happy with both AV's doing the job.

My system is an AMD XP2200 with 512MB of DDR ram running XP Pro.

Did you try the monitor settings suggested in several recent threads here? Initially I found the Monitor slowed down everything on my XP Computer until I installed the program without the Control Centre running and most of the compound file scanning switched off. Now I notice no slowdown whatsoever and run the KAV Monitor continuously.

Your present system should cover the threat of both viruses and trojans to good effect. And as you state the KAV Scanner is rather slow with everything selected to scan but it is a very thorough.

As a registered owner of NOD and with your finding that there are no conflicts with these two excellent AV programs, when the new NOD32 version 2 comes out I will try and install this on my computer as well. NOD will therefore act as a backup scanner to KAV.

Incidently for the e-mail threat are you using the pop scanner from NOD or the MailChecker from KAV? Or neither?

Pilli, maybe I misunderstand your post but you are saying that you use Nod32 as resident on access scanner and Kav for on demand scanner?

Is this not the way everyone uses back up scanners? Its the way I do it, Nod32 resident and Kav, DrWeb, F-prot and Norton sitting in reserve.

Just being installed but deactivated shouldn't cause any problems and I've never had any conflicts whatsoever (of course all components are taken out of startup)

    :)

Hi Blackcat, I am using the KAV pop scanner I find the NOD32 pop scanner fiddly to set up with 6 email accounts but still run it on my W2K partition :D

Hello Tinribs, As far as I know most ppl don't run two AV scanners :D Yes, NOD's Amon resident, KAV's email scanner, KAV setup as a scheduled scan & Both KAV & NOD as on demand. I could also use NOD's scheduler.
Also run TDS3 with execution protection installed.

I have heard that certain AV scanners such as Norton & McCfee do not play nicely with other scanners.

Pilli, KAV4, NOD32 and TDS3. Thats one pretty damn impressive set-up you have there!

One point. Test the KAV monitor again. Open up the monitor window, click on 'objects' then in scan compound files, only tick the box that says 'Plain mail'. Try that and see if it makes a difference.

:D Thanks Muf, I'll try playing with the settings in KAV - I like checking out these different combinations.
Have to say that TDS3 is one tool I would least like to lose!
My "security" set up at the moment apart from those already mentioned is as follows:
Gee Wong'd Linksys router - 600k Broadband connection
Sygate Pro or Oupost Pro firewalls
    Spybot & AdAware Pro
The proximitron when surfing with IE
    Spy blocker when using Opera
    Mailwasher + Spampal
    Port Explorer
    Worm Guard 3
+ all Javacools excellent set of tools. & Faber toys.

    Nice choice of tools there!

I'm using the recommended KAV monitor settings like Blackcat and there is little or no performance hit on the system with only Plain mail ticked and Scan only Infectable files.

One really nice feature I like is if you switch to Expert mode on left-side of Monitor configuration, it lets you define ALL those settings for each individual folder/file!!!

So I have the default performance settings for all drives, BUT for folders where I have games installed I have those unticked so nothing interferes with gaming performance.

Then the other extreme is I have my "Downloads" folder set to scan archives/self-extractors so anything I download gets scanned more thoroughly by the Monitor first.

    Just a suggestion.

    Solarpowered candle & Fedreov999,

The new forum looks interesting, so I have registered - Thanks.

By the sound of it, I will need to spend some time fine tuning KAV to get the best out of it - Good job I like tweaking :D

YOu should have an AV app yes, But some people just overkill, like this example:

I just have 1 AV app. I'm sure some over paranoid person will tell me it's stupid blah blah and that I should be more paranoid about security.

I bet half of you have never even been infected with anything (not because your software detected it purely because you have never recieved one)

All these backup scanners, anti-trojans, worm guards, port closing... come on...

Either you are the unluckiest users of the internet or you hang around in some dirty corners of the web (such as hacking comunities) to feel the need for all this.

Hi Pan, I, for one, have received many email viruses over the years - remember it only takes a couple of misplaced clicks & you can be comprimised.

I agree that one AV is probably adequate for a surfer on dialup with a dynamic IP address BUT I do not agree if you are running a network, even a small home network especially on BB, then a more robust belt & braces approach is required.

When I first got Broad Band, within two minutes my small network had been infected by the QAZ Trojan though an open port. That led me to a thorough investigation of the risks of the web & how to protect myself & hence my interest in testing what is available.

My site is dedicated to internet security and aiding safe surfing as is this one.

All of the Moderators & Admins here have a deep interest in Internet security & a vast amount of knowledge in dealing with an ever growing number of threats. They love to pass this information on for the benefit of both experienced & newbie users.

Most people here believe in some form of "layered" protection to cover the multitude of threats from the web.

Dirty surfing? I don't think so, many clean sites can be compromised & pass on spyware or other nasties, let alone the threat from HTML email where you may not even have to open an attachment to be infected.

Just make sure that you keep your AV upto date along with all the other security patches for you OS etc., practice Safe Hex & you may be OK but also take a good look over your shoulder now and again ;)

    Hi Pan,

Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. And I would be very happy if everyone used at least one decent AV.
Some people think they have never received a virus, but maybe that's because they never updated the virusscanner that came with their PC. ;)
I have more programs for protection on my computer then games, but on the other hand I have never had to format my HD because my computer got messed up by some malware. (And I'm not much of a gamer :) )
I'll admit that the corners of the internet I visit are not always well lit, but are you always sure of where you are being linked to when you click some URL?
I can buy three AV's for the price of one game should I want to.
In fact I bought TDS-3, Wormguard and Port Explorer for about that price and I'm sure I will enjoy them longer then any gamer will enjoy the latest release of "Need to kill" or whatever.
Nobody here will tell you that you are stupid, unless you pass judgement on someone else, without looking into the reasons for his/her behaviour.

    Regards,

    Pieter

You quote my comments Pan, I didnt go out a buy all these programs all at once, I have moved on bit by bit and purchased other programs but instead of ditching my av's I decided to keep them up to date and use them as back ups, its my choice and I'm pleased to have them, I have stated elsewhere that I recieve many infected files sent to me to get my verdict and a second opinion ( a sort of unnoficial tech support) but thats my choice and I'm entitled to my choice, your choice for one av is fine.

ps. Maybe if you are going to hang around and add your input you might like to register.
