Assuming you have a dual monitor graphics card, and it's drivers installed, it's pretty much plug & play in Windows.

There are utilities such as Ultramon which can add functionality to multiple monitor setups.

    http://www.realtimesoft.com/ultramon/

My experience has been that most modern dual-head video cards (by modern I mean video cards that have drivers for XP and Windows 7) don't need any extra software utilities, though, the drivers and the card itself does the work.

An exception might be if the monitors themselves are very old models, however, because the video card or the O/S might not have the correct setup information in an INF file for the specific monitor.

If this is the case, it is possible to amend a similar INF or EDID file, or create a new one, using a tool such as Moninfo from Entech, who also make other monitor utilities (MultiRes).

As someone said, it's all about plug and get into your device driver configuration and set it up as you like. :D

    Yes you can.
Right click on desktop and choose screen resolution.
Now change the primary monitor by selecting the correct monitor and tick make this my main display. only one monitor will have this option since the other one is already the primary monitor.

which graphics card do you have?

with ati graphics cards you can use the catalyst control centre to achieve this.
I dont currently have a machine with an nvidia card but i assume you can use the software that comes with their drivers to do the same thing.

Martin Brinkmann has great information about monitor adjustments here:

plus at the bottom of that page there are several more "related articles".

Assuming that the Win7 and XP installations both recognize the Asus ML239H -- if the monitor appears in Device Manager > Monitors with the correct model number -- then you shouldn't have to do anything with Asset Manager, because having the name recognized means that Windows has already found the correct setup information so it knows what resolution(s) and other settings the monitor can use.

However, with older monitors this sometimes isn't the case. Especially with Win7, Microsoft did not include definitions (setup information) for many older monitors, so when you plug it in the monitor might just be listed as "Generic monitor" or something like that, and it probably will default to 800x600 at 60Hz and 32-bit color. This is when utilities like Asset Manager can be used to determine what range of settings a specific monitor can handle, and so with this information you can create a new or updated EDID or INF file which you can then use to "install" into Windows.

SevenForums has some good tutorials about this:

First we need to know what you exactly want to do with your second screen.
Do you want a second screen acting like an extension of your desktop, or you want a clone of the first one?

From what i can see here you probably want it as an extension but smaller in order to avoid dragging windows left and right?

a little bit OT, yet a relevant soft is WinSplit Revolution
it also helps in moving open windows to the other monitor
