I'm not saying that this method is practical or better than using an empty snapshot, I just wonder if this would work, because it sounds so logical.

    1. You backup your actual system partition, containing WinXPproSP2 + Applications + FDISR (+ Data)
    2. You install winVISTA
    3. You install FDISR
    4. You copy/update from primary snapshot to a new archived winVISTA-snapshot on your external harddisk

    5. You restore the image of your actual system partition
    6. You copy/update from archived winVISTA-snapshot to a new snapshot.

Now you have a winXPproSP2-snapshot and a winVISTA-snapshot, but without using an empty snapshot.

This procedure is basically the same as a restore to an empty disk, for example after replacing a disk.

'Install any kind of Windows release that supports NTFS, install FD-ISR, create snapshots based on existing archives that also contain any kind of Windows release that supports NTFS.'

There is a tiny caveat with Vista: Vista introduces a different boot procedure, which needs to be handled by the current beta release of FD-ISR.
It would be interesting to see how FD-ISR beta handles any of the possible scenario's.

Well, it was just a theoretical idea, it would take much more time, than using an empty snapshot anyway. Booting directly in an archived snapshot was also too cumbersome.

I understand that winVISTA is priority #1 in FDISR, but not for me in the next five years.
I'm waiting for other improvements, than compatibility with winVISTA.
I need schedules on demand (without password) to make copy/update more safely and easier in FDISR, like in ATI and ShadowProtect.
I'm not surprised nobody talks about schedules in this forum, it's the worst part of FDISR.

Your idea makes sense, I wouldn't be surprised if this procedure is somehow more solid than going the empty snapshot way.

For example, when you install Windows 2000 first, you get NTFS version 3.0, when you install Windows XP first, you get NTFS version 3.1, which is supported by some service pack of Windows 2000.
I just imagine that the order of installations has an impact on the end result.

Maybe you are right, but my technical knowledge of Windows isn't big enough. I didn't even know about NTFS v3.0 and v3.1 and that is just one example of my lack of knowledge. :D

I installed Vista using the method almost exacly as outlined by Eric Albert and it worked out fine for me. I now have WinXP and Vista in different snapshots/archives and have experience no problems over the past couple of days. I don't know whether it matters or not but I also used the beta version of FDISR.

I have had the same setup using the beta Version of FDISR using the empty snapshot method since the beta came out and have had no major problems.

Before the beta came out, I used the old version with the same setup with no problems. Maybe I was lucky.

Thanks for posting the proof that it works, then I don't have to try it.
