    Greetings,

Ok, I am trying out True Image coming from Norton Ghost. I can't seem to find an answer in the user guide as to what exactly happens when your backup location is full.

    Example:

If I set my backup location to allow 10 backups with a max of 1 terabyte data, then set incremental backups as a task once a week. What happens after the 10th Incremental backup, does it go back and make a Full backup and start over again. Does it just give you an error and not do anything? The user guide is not that helpful in saying: "2) maximum number of backups
This is the total number of backups allowed for a location"...lol..gee really...never would of got that one:p

In Norton Ghost it's much easier, you just do a full backup say you want 5 incremental backups max, and then after 5 it will just go and make a full backup again. Now will True Image do this? Or maybe I am tackling the problem wrong? Should I have a full backup scheduled to just over write the old full backup, then make another task for incermentals? That would seem like a lot of useless files then.

    hmmm...

There are two kinds of limits in ATI-- the limits of a Backup Location and the limits of a task.

Backup Location limits cover size, number and age.

Task limits cover number of incs/diffs before a new full is created.

When Backup Location limits are exceeded after a backup is created (the limits are tested after a backup is made so that no good backups get deleted if the backup fails) ATI will try to consolidate the the incs/diff and full into a single backup -- if the limits are still exceeded, then ATI deletes the oldest.

When a task is run, ATI first checks the Task limits, and if the limits are reacdhed, it will create a new backup instead of an inc/diff. After that backup is made, ATI will test for Backup Location limits and proceed as above.

Of course, this all assumes that tasks perform properly andin ATI they don't always, expecially if you are doing incs/diffs or file-by-file backups.

I am a new user of True Image Home. I have looked thru the user manual twice, and it may be there, but I can find no reference to what happens when the backup location fills up and there is no more room for incremental or differential backups. I note that an earlier poster states that in this case, the oldest backup(s) will be deleted in order to make room. Can anyone please point me to where Acronis documents this in its user manual or other documentation?

It's on page 60 of the TI 11 PDF file I have:
In cases that a deletion or consolidation can't (or doesn't) occur, the backup usually fails. Note that the check is performed after the new backup is created. This means the location has to have enough room for the new backup to exist along with all the already existing backups.

    For MudCrab:
Thanks for locating this phrase for me. I was certain it had to be there somewhere - I even thought I recalled seeing it when I first went thru the manual. It's on page 62 of my user guide, in case anyone else has a newer copy of the guide. It's really buried, too; and I don't believe there is any other reference to what happens when the backup location runs out of space.
Of course, it's also very important, as MudCrab points out, that the application checks AFTER the backup is performed, so apparently a backup must fail before the application will delete older backups.

    Thanks again, MudCrab.

No. If the backup succeeds, the ATi checks tha Bckup Location limits and if they are exceed attempts to resolve by consilidation or deletion of oldest backup. If the backup fails, then it doesn't need to check limits since no new file is beiong added to the location.
