in the cloud technology

A not very well respected- PcMag has an article reference to the term 'in the cloud' technology. read it if you want just an FYI...

It should be called "In the money" Technology. with all the buzz on it its going to be nothing but a Cash cow for AV's. and still do little to nothing.

More spin on cloud computing. Linux keeps looking more and more appealing, if this is the way windows security and such is headed!

 

for it to work we will need much faster and more reliable internet.
just think if it was like that atm everytime your useless modem/router you got from your isp resetted you wouldnt just loose the internet you would use your whole OS!
i dont like the idea of cloud computing at all.
i want to be able to control what versions of software i use.
you will lose alot of control.
the network at college is bad enough downloading full profiles everytime you want to login. 250mb everytime... due to the crappy windows server
havent ms heard of incremental downloads?

just think how much worse it will be when pretty much your whole os is got from the internet?

hopfully the big companies hurry up and port everything to linux so i can use that.

its bad enough when you update a program and something else doesnt work. or if its a full version upgrade just uninstall and install the old version. atm you can just restore an image of the OS and job done.
but what happerns when with cloud computing they update from firefox 4 to firefox 5?
suddenly loads of users have loads of problems and they cant go back to the older version that worked.

eiether that or you have to wait like a year before they deploy firefox 5 to make sure it works properly by which time firefox 6 is out..

True but still there is some truth in it

 

Can anyone name please all the security companies that have this plus in order of who had it first, so 1 Prevx (i think), 2?, 3, etc.

You missed out Panda, I think they released their cloud offering before the above mentioned AV companies.

 

Maybe security wise, but functionality wise it's still light years behind Windows.
So until they sort out that problem, most of ppl will stay on Windows.

This whole cloud thing turned up into "should you use GMail or not" sort of thing.
I don't care if GMail goes bonkers. After all it provided me with uninterupted service for years without a single lost mail while i lost them several times when i was using POP3. And hell, even POP3 is in the cloud. You cannot ever be sure where is mail located before you fetch it, you cannot be sure that no one can read it etc.
Plus everything i have on GMail are completelly uninteresting things where i wouldn't really care about security breaches or if somehow GMail decides to shut it down over night. Sure i'd miss few mails but i could live without them.
But at the moment it's better than anything else out there and i wouldn't trade it for anything.

 

Interesting, that almost certainly, the "Google Os" will be an 'In the cloud' sort of thing too, the os may not be on the HW: selling point: maybe, direct threat to MS : certainly

In the cloud hype is stuff athat we use ever since. P2P is in the cloud, all mail services are in the cloud, forums are in the cloud, file hosting is in the cloud, webpages are also. Adn this isn't something that we invented last year, it's there for years. They just invented a new name for it. Nothing new t be honest.

"Cloud computing", "in the cloud techonology" etc are marketing "buzzwords" which in laymans terms mean something along the lines of "its not on your computer".

I wouldnt say its bad nor good, totally depends on the company and developers - some companies may use it and make good, productive use out of "the cloud" whereas others in reality may be ineffective and inefficient and keep it as a marketing ploy.
