    Hello,

Things are 90% back to normal and I'm feeling about 90% better.

I'm on the downloads page for HOSTS and there are 4 different download options but not much description as to what each one is or which one is best.

Two are zipped two are text... two have the address of zero's the other two are 127.0.01.
Now on my TDS is 127, should I download the link with the same number? Also, which format the text or the zipped?
The only unzip program I have is 7-zip and I've never used it. I normally go for .exe files.

And yes, I have read through the pages about HOSTS and I will go through the read me file after download before I start posting questions, if I have any.

~Just a side note, some of you may find this funny, of course I do now that I feel better but... at the beginning of the summer season, I planted wild flowers in my garden along with some mircle grow. ;) By the end of June these huge stalks with huge leaves were growing and I was told they were sunflowers. Well, they weren't. For the last two weeks I have been sick and I spent most of last weekend in the hospital. Only to find out two days ago that the huge plant that still hasn't produced the "sunflower" was actually RAGWEED! Let me tell you, these plants are 10x's their normal size. They WERE standing about 8 feet tall. Needless to say, I called a landscaper to have them cut down and I am feeling much, much better!

Sorry for such a long story, I'm bored and I'm laughing at myself now!

    ~Lori

    Hi Lori,

First of all: I am very sorry to hear about that ragweed-problem and you getting so sick from it that you had to go to the hospital. I really do hope you will feel better very soon!!!!!

I'm also sorry that your computer problem came back again.
This whole HOSTS thing might not solve it....

    About HOSTS:
You asked which of the four files to download.
    Take the 127.0.0.1 one.
    Now zipped or not?
If I remember me well, then the last time you downloadad a zip file, you had a problem: it had a sig extension. I don't know whether that will happen again.
So it might maybe better to download the text version.
    So, I suggest: 127.0.0.1 text-version.
BTW: I don't know which kind of connection you have: dial-up or a faster one?

    Take care Lori !!!

    Thanx FanJ!

    I have a dsl connection.

So you really don't think adding downloadalot to the hosts file will stop them from appearing or setting cookies?
    That sux!

I'm on the How do I use hosts file page... I may be having another "air head" moment but, am I supposed to copy and paste the text to the host file that is already on my pc which I opened with Notepad?

I'm assuming the copy paste thing is correct... but, they have "types" at the beginning, like there is a list of 127.0.0.1 named yahoo and then it lists all the sites, should i copy and paste the heading for each one or is it not neccessary?

    here have a look see...

    Lori,

Did you also read this page about Hostess:

    http://accs-net.com/hostess/

Hostess is a free little program with which you can easily maintain your HOSTS file.

But, as far as I have seen after a quick look, you can only get it zipped; so, there might be a problem if your zip-utility is not working right or your extension for zipped files is not the right one.

I am going to read your post again.

After you have added www.downloadalot.com to your HOSTS file, there will never be an opportunity that that site connects to or from your computer, as long as HOSTS is enabled.
Enabling and disabling of HOSTS is very easy done using Hostess.

I am not saying that your problem will be over, but I am saying that in that case that site will never be able to connect to your PC; so that site can not place cookies on your system or do any other thing to your PC.

Ok, I have one named HOSTS.SAM, which gives a description as on the hosts page, then another just named hosts with only one entry. I tried the copy paste method and my pc turned me down saying I have not enough memory.

so could i possibly just add this to the hosts file

    127.0.01 (d/l alot's site addy)
    then click save?

    Lori,

Can you post your existing HOSTS file?
I mean the one that was already on your system.
I assume that you did not "installed" the downloaded HOSTS file in the meantime.

If you don't like to post it here, no problem; email it to me at fanj@wilders.org in an attachment.

I would like to have a look at it, if you don't mind.
    OK?

    sure, i don't mind...
This is the first one, I guess after I opened it with notepad it saved itself as HOSTS (this was HOSTS.SAM)

    # Copyright (c) 1998 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP stack for Windows98
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    #
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    #
    # For example:
    #
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

    127.0.0.1 localhost

Here is the other one (all small letters, hosts)

    64.14.40.148 auto.search.msn.com

And that's all that is in that one!

I don't understand what you mean here exactly with that copy paste method.
What were you exactly trying to do? Copying what to where?

How much memory do you have?

What I was hoping that we could do, was this:

Install the HOSTS file; on my Win98SE system it is here:
    C:\WINDOWS\HOSTS

    Install Hostess for maintaining HOSTS.

Make a new group, say the group Lori.

Add two new hostnames to that Lori group:
    www.downloadalot.com
    www.searchalot.com

    [hr]

In case this whole process takes too much troubles, then indeed we could do it another way:

Copy the downloaded HOSTS file to:
    C:\WINDOWS\HOSTS

(Assuming that that is indeed the place where your existing HOSTS file is right now)

    Add two lines:
    127.0.0.1 www.downloadalot.com
    127.0.0.1 www.searchalot.com

Before doing this whole thing, it might be a good idea that I have a look at your exeisting HOSTS file, to make sure that you don't overwrite an important line in there during the process of copying the downloaded HOSTS file to C:\WINDOWS\HOSTS

The beginning of HOSTS should look something like this:

    # Created by Hostess 2.10 on 09/06/2002 20:53:31

    127.0.0.1 localhost

And under that line with local host in it, add those two above mentioned lines.
BTW: any line which begins with # is ignored during normal surfing; those lines with # at the start are there only for comments.

    OK,

    Here we go:

Copy the downloaded HOSTS file to the directory where at the moment your existing HOSTS file is
On my system it is here:
    C:\WINDOWS\HOSTS

HOSTS is not written with capitals on your system.
HOSTS is a file without any extension.

Open HOSTS in Notepad or Wordpad.

    Your first line is:
    127.0.0.1 local host

    then add the following:

    # Lori

    127.0.0.1 www.downloadalot.com
    127.0.0.1 www.searchalot.com

    And delete that line:
    64.14.40.148 auto.search.msn.com
At the moment I see no special reason to have it there.
You can always put that line back.

Then save the file. Make sure it is safed as hosts without any extension.

Ok, here is what I have tired to do.

I have to files named hosts first of all... both I've posted the contents for.

The first suggestion was to use the text file. when I clicked it, I recieved a page with all the sites. I assumed I was to highlight and copy all the sites to the hosts file. That is when I recieved the message that I do not have enough memory to do that. The hosts file I attempted to copy all the sites to has this only one entry in it 64.14.40.148 auto.search.msn.com.

(Should I install a hosts file if I already have one?)

To do the hostess d/l from here http://www.smartin-designs.com/hostess.htm, I get the File Download with open, save, cancel, and more info options, do i save or open, if I save, is it to be saved at c:\windows ?

If I'm driving you crazy I am ever so sorry!
I just don't want to do this wrong then have to do it all over again.

Well, that's good to know, cause you know I'll be back to finish this process...

BTW: About the d/l alot searching process, IF it appears again, exactly where should I post for further assistance with it?

    Thanx,
    Lori

    I'd suggest: privacy problems.
