Don't be distracted by the shiny new "Nest" smart display that was just announced: Nest died at Google I/O 2019. "Google Nest" is the new reality now, where Nest is no longer a standalone company but instead is a sub-brand (not even a division) of Google.

Nest laid out its future in an ominously titled "What's Happening" page on Nest.com and a notice on the Works with Nest page. It sounds like a brutal outcome for users, who are looking at a dead-end ecosystem, potentially broken smart homes, and the shattering of the Google/Nest privacy firewall.

The new branding hasn't hit the Google Store yet, but dig through Google's help pages and you'll see that every Nest product has been renamed to "Google Nest." Now we have the "Google Nest Learning Thermostat," the "Google Nest Protect," [...]
The takeaway here is that since Nest is not a standalone company anymore, "Nest" doesn't get to be a standalone product brand anymore. Officially, it will always be "Google Nest."

The second big thing to come out of the show is that Google is killing the "Works with Nest" platform. This was a smart home platform that would let the Nest thermostat act as a hub and coordinator for a lot of your other smart home products. A notice on the "Works with Nest" webpage reads [...]

I'm sure there are "Works with Nest" ecosystem users out there that bought products specifically because they "Worked with Nest."
Nest-branded products will continue to work with each other, but since "Works with Nest" was a program that let other services talk to Nest, a lot of third-party integrations will be going away.

Google has revised its plans for the migration from Works with Nest (WWN) to the Works with Google Assistant platform (WWGA) in an attempt to calm users concerned that their smart home setups will soon fail.

On Thursday, Michele Turner, Director of Product and Smart Home Ecosystem for Google Nest said the company is "committed to supporting the integrations you value and minimizing disruptions during this transition," and so existing devices and integrations will continue to work with Nest accounts beyond the retirement date.
"Our goal remains to give you the tools you need to make your home, and those of other Nest users, helpful in the ways that matter most to you."

IFTTT warns its Nest users not to migrate to Google accounts

IFTTT, the free service that uses conditional applets to extend the functionality of smart home devices, has issued both good and bad news to Nest owners. The good news is that IFTTT Applets designed for the Nest Thermostat, Nest Protect, and Nest Cam will continue to work after August 31st, the date Google will shut down the Works with Nest program. The bad news is that the applets will stop working if users migrate their Nest accounts to Google accounts.

Nest owners who use IFTTT and choose not to migrate to Google accounts will face some quandaries down the road. Chiefly, there’s the prospect of missing out on new features that will only be available with a Google Account.

Report: Home builders ditch Nest products after Google takeover

Forcing users into a Google account doesn't work for the home building industry.
Bloomberg's report says that residential builders, who "collectively purchase tens of thousands of Nest devices each year" have started avoiding Nest products due to Google's changes. The report quotes Mark Zikra, vice president of technology at CA Ventures, as saying, "We’ve stopped. In an apartment complex we’re talking about 200, 300 devices that would be installed in one swoop and then all of a sudden everyone moves in."
