Google Meet is rolling out a few new features intended to improve the safety and security of the platform. Among these features is the ability to add up to 25 co-hosts to a meeting to expand control and keep meetings free from interruptions.

The feature to add co-hosts was previously only available to Google Education customers, but it is now being rolled out to more Google Workspaces. This new co-hosting feature makes it easier to manage meetings.
One person doesn’t have to mute participants, launch polls, and manage Q&As, but instead can focus on leading the meeting and discussions and leave these tasks to the assigned co-hosts.

Another new feature that is being released is Quick Access, which will allow hosts to control who can automatically join a meeting and who needs to ask permission first. This is a valuable safety feature as it gives the hosts more control over who attends specific meetings.

Another new control is the ‘People’ panel, which lets you search for specific participants. You can then apply any needed moderations or assign co-host abilities directly from this panel to individual participants.

As video conferencing has become more popular over the last year and a half, there's one thing many of us have come to dread — echoes. An Echo is just one of a bad batch of issues that still plague video calls. Thankfully, Google is setting out to fix that.

Meet is already quite good at filtering out echoes and other background noise from calls, but it can't be one hundred percent effective. That's why Google has just announced that Meet will soon be able to identify where the problem is coming from so it can be fixed more easily.
This feature will begin rolling out to Workspace and G Suite users as of August 23rd and may take up to 15 days to reach everyone. Free accounts will have to wait a little longer.

Google Meet has had live caption support for well over a year now. The feature initially supported English, but Google added support for Spanish, German, French, and Portuguese late last year. However, it is only useful for people who speak the same language. To help users overcome the language barrier, Google Meet is now testing a new feature called Live translated captions.

Google says (via Android Central) that the feature will help users consume content in their preferred language, thereby equalizing information sharing, learning, and collaboration. The company claims that Live translated captions could “be particularly useful for all-hands meetings and training programs with globally distributed teams, ensuring every employee understands and is not disadvantaged due to language skills.”
In addition, the feature will prove beneficial for educators and students.

More than two years into the pandemic, as video calls have taken over workspaces, Google Meet is now rolling out the ability to livestream meetings on YouTube, which could open them up to viewers more easily than the old way of livestreaming events through Meet itself. Google Workplace admins can opt in to public streaming for the business accounts they manage, which also includes a few guardrails to make sure your weekly standup doesn’t turn into an open mic.

The feature is available to most paid Workplace accounts: Enterprise tiers (starter, standard, and plus), Education Plus, Teaching and Learning upgrade, and Workplace individual subscribers, as well as Google One Premium plan members in certain countries. People on most starter, basic, legacy, or essentials packages, however, do not have access.

If you want to livestream a Google Meet session on YouTube, you’ll have to put in a request in advance to have your YouTube channel approved. The approval process can take up to 24 hours. Users who need to change how long streams can be and for how long can do so in their privacy settings, and a full list of what’s needed to get the streams going is available on this support page.

Google is moving forward with its merger of Duo and Meet, if not quite as elegantly as some might like. TechCrunch reports Google is rebranding Duo for Android and iOS as the Meet app, complete with the video calling-centric logo. The company had already migrated many of Meet's features. However, the old Meet app isn't going away for now — instead, it will be rebranded as "Google Meet (original)."

All Duo users should see the rebrand by September. You'll have to use your Google account for any meeting features, but familiar elements (like effects and contacts) will remain intact. The original Meet app will continue to work, but won't get ad hoc calling and will eventually disappear.

As a spokesperson explained in June, the merger is meant to adapt to the "evolving needs" of video calling, including meetings, by providing a unified experience.

TechCrunch: The next step in Google’s merger of Duo and Meet starts today

In June, Google told us that it would start merging its Duo video chat service for consumers with Meet, its Zoom competitor for business users. The next phase of this merger starts today.

Merging two apps was always going to be a complicated process. Add to that the overall confusion around Google’s messaging strategy and you can imagine what this looks like, but what Google is basically doing here is bringing all of Meet’s capabilities to the Duo app and then turning that into the new and updated Google Meet app.

Google Meet meetings might soon become livelier thanks to Spotify, YouTube, and UNO integration

With the Google Meet-Duo merger now underway, Google has started work on bringing new features to its combined video calling and meeting service. According to new strings spotted in a teardown of the latest Google Meet update, the service might soon let you stream music from Spotify, watch YouTube videos, or play games like UNO during meetings.

The new strings, spotted in version 2022.07.23 of Google Meet (via 9to5Google), reveal that Google will soon introduce a couple of new features that will make meetings more interesting. These include support for Spotify, YouTube, UNO, and more. Once these new integrations roll out, meeting participants will get the option to play music and videos from Spotify and YouTube during meetings, play games like Heads Up, UNO, and Kahoot, and manage tasks using GQueues. However, these apps and games won’t integrate directly into the video call.

The strings suggest that Google Meet will integrate with the Android app for the aforementioned services and give users the option to “live share” them with other participants. On selecting the live sharing option, Google Meet will “take your call to a third-party app.”

After launching for Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides, Workspace client-side encryption (CSE) is coming to Google Meet.

This feature is aimed at companies that “need an extra level of confidentiality and makes the media indecipherable even to Google,” including audio and video. Client-side encryption can be useful for meeting compliance in highly regulated industries and “calls regarding sensitive intellectual property.”

Google has brought back Duo logo and name, but it launches the new, unified Meet app

Google was supposed to simplify its communication and collaboration platforms. The search giant had decided to merge the insanely popular Duo app with the Meet app. However, an update for the Google Meet app (which was previously the Duo app) on Android, has reintroduced the familiar Google Duo icon. Clicking on the same, however, launches the new, unified, Google Meet app.

Earlier this month, Google rebranded its Duo video chat app as Meet and incorporated Duo’s features into the app. The company even renamed the Meet app “Meet (Original)”. It seems the majority of Duo users aren’t happy with the platform’s sudden identity change.

Perhaps to placate Duo loyalists, in the latest update of the Meet app for Android, Google has brought back the original Duo icon. The company even resurrected the app’s identity with a separate shortcut that appears in the app launcher.
Although Google Duo is back, it is only for its namesake. Tapping on the newly re-introduced Duo app opens Google Meet. Google has reportedly confirmed that this is intentional.

As Google carries out the needlessly complex process of combining both the Meet and Duo apps, now it’s throwing a feature copied from Zoom in the mix. In an update on the Google Workspace blog, the company announced that Google Meet will soon give you the ability to unmute yourself by holding down the spacebar and to mute yourself again by releasing it.

If you frequently use Zoom, this feature might sound a lot like its push-to-talk feature — and that’s because it’s essentially the same thing. Zoom has had the feature since at least 2020, and it comes in handy whenever you want to chime in during a meeting but don’t want to stay unmuted for long.

Confusingly, Google’s efforts to merge Duo and Meet have left us with the new Meet app (the one that combines both Duo and Meet), the old Meet (Original) app, and a Duo shortcut that leads to Meet. It’s truly something only Google could think up. That said, I’m pretty sure the new push-to-talk feature’s coming to the new Google Meet app, but it’s still not exactly clear whether it’s coming to the Meet (Original) app, as Google will eventually discontinue it.

Google Meet app getting account switcher as Play Store listing set for handover

An update to the new, merged Google Meet app last week brought back the blue Duo icon as some people were confused by the transition, which is now continuing with a new account switcher and other changes.

Besides the reintroduced icon, version 173 of Google Meet (previously the Duo app) is rolling out account switching. Meet (original) has long offered that capability in the top-right corner if you have multiple accounts on your device (e.g., personal and work). The new Meet account switcher is not yet widely available.
Version 173 also updates default link handling so that meeting URLs open in the new app instead of Meet (original), if that’s installed.

The blue logo returned last week because people were lost when they couldn’t search “Duo” in their launcher. Google plans to tweak Meet’s onboarding experience to make the Duo-to-Meet transition more apparent, and the company now has this support article to explain the different icons:

With the feature, users will be able to join meetings on Zoom via their Google Meet hardware devices and join Google Meet meetings through Zoom Rooms. However, it is key to note that certain features like polls, wired present, and dual screen support would be unavailable for users joining Zoom via Meet hardware devices and vice versa.

Nevertheless, the interoperability comes without additional charges for users and is a built-in feature. Moreover, users can access the join via meeting code and scheduled join capabilities alongside “the ability to configure no-knock joining (lobby bypass) in either direction.” The interoperability is like that of Google Meet and Cisco Webex and Pexip for Google Meet.
