I'm going to do this the hard way and simply write in the details - this board's table s/w is too hard to maintain.  So, can anyone add any categories of Things Which Must Be Controlled to this fledgling features comparison chart, please?  Thank you.

    Virus
    Trojan
    Cookie
    Web Bug
    Advert
    BHO
    DSO
    Macro
    Active Script
    JavaScript
    ActiveX
    Spyware
    Keylogger

Paul, can we keep this topic pinned for a while, so that it doesn't slide out of sight?

Well slap me silly and call me wilbur, checkout had a good idea! And who said he was too busy marauding as a ZA commando over at GRC?

Now there are some hard decisions to be made by you checkout (since this is your idea):

Which AT and AV, and FW are going to get the smily face when there are so many different opinions? You might want to go with ZA while I would choose TPF/KPF, and others would chose L n S,NIS, Sygate, or Outpost. AT, AV and FW seem to be the most debated categories with no clear winner. (well NOD32 is pretty close to a clear winner, but these NAV people keep piping up).

Is this going to be decided by the number of votes? Do two uneducated votes beat on educated vote? Do people sign up 20 times to vote for there favorite AT? Do we need to take a serious look at doing our own testing of all these products with large amounts of malware?

I love the chart idea, but that smilie face may be a tad biased one way or the other.

Checkout, wonderful idea :), but I'd have to agree with UNICRON
Something like this will be very helpful to alot of people (like me :-/), to sort out what protection/support they have and not end up getting alot of conflict programs or missing something you need...I for one would print it out and have it hanging next to my computer.. ;)

Great idea Checkout, but again, I have to agree that without some voting system, this could be a *tad* biased.

My suggestion would be that some sort of voting system would be implemented (where everyone could only vote ONCE of course  :)). And by publicizing the link to the voting system various places online, you could get a lot of votes, and, thus, a fairly good representation of preferences (AND it would also help remove people's accusations that you set the "preferred" programs based on your own preferences - and I don't see how that could be a bad thing  ;)).

    Hi  :D

I used Naviscope and WebWasher because they have tonnes of features.

WebWasher acts as a proxy and filters the followings:

    b) ads
    c) cookies
    d) web bugs
    e) popups
    f) referrals
    g) animations
    h) etc..etc..

    Ooooops.....can't recall from memory.....sorry

    Naviscope (my favourite once)

Naviscope achieves acceleration through five advanced techniques: prefetching, DNS resolution caching, persistent connections, MTU/RWIN optimizations and advertisement blocking. In addition to blocking ads, Naviscope can also block cookies, backgrounds, blinking text, Javascript, and sounds. Furthermore, Naviscope has a popular SiteMapper that allows you to navigate a web page before your browser even displays it. Naviscope shows Web activity as you browse, in a display that allows you to perform Internet diagnostics, obtain Website registration information, and even stop individual objects from loading. While you browse, Naviscope can keep your computer clock adjusted to the NIST atomic clock and shows you how fast your Internet connection really is. Advanced users find our HTTP monitor useful, as well as the complete logging and analysis capabilities we provide. A fully configurable toolbar puts all of these, and many other features, within easy reach.

This is a great idea.  I would be very interested in seeing a feature comparison between products as well as hearing other users opionions on how well they work.

    Features I'd like to see:

Cookies, Ads, Popups, Parental control, Intrusion Detection, Attachment filtering, Java Script & ActiveX control filtering, Privacy Guard.

Hey, great response, folks!  Except the factetious ones from unicron, of course - nah, only kidding, Unicron!

Please continue offering suggestions, especially in regard to the voting system.  Nothing's set in concrete, and I do want to get this right!

For the immediate future, please suggest:

    Functionalities
    Products and their functions

    Merci.

checkout, I ran a review of several privacy apps a few months back.  You can refer to this thread @ dslr as a sort of TOC.

There you'll find my reviews to junkbuster, naviscope, adsubtract and webwasher for instance.

I have a review on proxomitron (with updated links) found here @ ccsp.

really great idea.......have you considered entering  "easy of use"...or "easy of config"

there are many wonderful programs that users may have no idea how to properly config.....an thus results in a near uselessness.....

a rule based firewall properly config is awesome...but may offer only minimal protection if improperly config..

internet explorer zones....I know people who have no idea that it has zones...much less how to use them properly.    the same may apply to numerous browsers......yet certain rules apply in general an can be used.

I added Zhen's block list to my proxy....works great...but I don't use promo.....had it chained for awhile....an yet I've known of promo users who fail pravacy tests.......an that wont happen if Zhen's blocks are used........programs need to be properly config.

my point being that a great wonderful program can get a bad score because the user didn't config it properly......

maybe a link could be provided for the programs scored...that would lead to a site that provides the best known instructions on how to config the program?

           just a thought.

    hi there snowman :)

what you just mentioned there about the programs being configured propertly is so true.....and it can take several weeks through trail and error just learning hot to use a program with the default settings, meanwhile, the average home user is vulnerable to attacks and loss of privacy.....with everything i've read about lately, it doesn't give the user much time to learn something so important.

i have yet to really have the chance to learn what my XP can do (fun wise) since i've been spending the time to secure it the best way i can in the shortest time possible (moreso now with BDE stalking the net for its victims)........
    Checkout ~waves~
when i saw your post with the graph of security software and it's compatibility & comparisons to each programs function i thought WOW...that's what i need to know!!  Thank you for starting this!

i am not sure exactly what the final outcome will be, but i know it will definitely save me some time researching some areas.

is it possible to list ....ummm...(makes wish list up)
compatibility with the security programs to the unsecurity programso_O  Or, would it help better if people could list what they use and what they would like to secure (in some kind of graph-type list)?

the reason i am asking is with one program i had looked at, not sure what it was now i'm losing track of them ~l~, but it said it blocked port 80.....i don't know my ports yet that well....but i do know i don't want anything stopping my icq from working.

(i am working on smaller posts.... ;)

Ooops...ok, that was not a small post....

but since i'm posting again... :)....i am at a total loss as to learning about proxys...i've tried...(still don't understand that winscript/calc test)...but i am no computer technician....and inbetween learning my paint programs, i do get carried away with the passion to learn this side of the internet...the security....and it is an incredible passion to learn and know and share it. :)

but i'm failing big time with the browser vulnerabilities.
i keep changing the security settings in IE6 and end up constantly clicking on yes or no with each java/script popup......and that in itself is dangerous, because my daughter is starting to just "click the yes" too automatically.........ease of use vs. no use....i dunno.

in respect for Checkout I don't want to get off topic here....so will onky briefly offer a few words of encouragement.

as you notice from the posts that have been made by others......these are good people more than will to help.......so don't ever be shy about asking a question or for help.......there is no such thing as a dumb question....an if anyone were to make fun of a poster asking a question I feel very certain that Paul or the moderators will set that straight quickly.....as would the members of this BB.

Zhen is an expert on promo......WeSim knows webwasher....both great people........

if you have a question....just make a new post.

Checkout....please excuse me for getting alittle of your topic........
