F-Prot...New Version?

Frisk/F-Prot seem to have been way behind in releasing any official details, resulting in increasingly confused and irritated users, left pretty much in the dark : https://forum.f-prot.com/index.php?PHPSIDFP=vns47pu265n6iv60s46lc20tt2&topic=2367.0

You would have hoped they might have organised a more professional, co-ordinated release No news here : http://www.f-prot.com/version_release_dates.html

The engine version updated

It seems just update the engine and some bug fix only.

 

I didn't realise theey were still around.

 

Some years ago, it was light, but his detection not seemed very high. Someone have recent experiences ?

i am afraid that the softpedia's information not correct. i installed the new version, then found that the engine updated to 4.6.5

recent years f-prot depressed in the face of famour vendor(avira norton mcafee eset). the detection is decent and the interface never changed,,,

Alarmingly bad

 

Makes me wonder who's still buying this thing apart from maybe Icelandic government institutions. They haven't updated interface since version 4 when Inspector Clouseau was still with the FRISK (in v6, its exactly the same), they haven't been included in any test for ages, there is no buzz around them at all and from what i can see performance is very bad (sure Languy used mostly spyware/adware, but it failed even for stuff that it did detect). Not that it was ever standing out from the crowd but now when the rest has made huge leaps, F-Prot just remained somewhere in the background, far far away from the rest.
If you want minimalistic, MSE is a better bet and its even free.

 

Yup, the engine version is 4.6.5.141

 

Rather sad to see this small AV vendor stagnant for the last few years.

They just haven't got the manpower to upgrade their AV and at the present time a full blown suite is highly unlikely in the future.

Well, there are no Trend Micro users so that poll is not exactly a good reflection of the usage numbers.

I went to make my own internal test and after 3 links, F-Prot got self owned. First the bot turned F-Prot offline and after reboot, it's main component apparently got modified and it quarantined its own component. Now i can doubleclick its tray icon and nothing happens. Teh joy. I really didn't expect anything to target F-Prot at all considering how minor its usage is compared to other globally known vendors like AVG or avast!. Or MSE or Norton or you get the picture.

Yup, after reboot, nothing changed. Very bad... Apparently process is still active and tray icon stil works, but i can't open its main window.

 

AFAIK CommTouch does use the engine in their products.

 

Needles to say i never heard of CommTouch either...

 

F-Prot is as poor as Iceland ...

 

Commtouch bought the Command Anti-Malware from Authentium about a year ago. Command Anti-Malware is still using the F-Prot engine.

It's hard to belive there still around,I guess development is not on there priority,Even the web site looks about the same.Maybe there to busy ice skating.Well actually it maybe to warm yet,since iceland is not like what it sounds.

 

I'm using F-Prot right now on a 30 day trial. Seems to be doing okay. Found a couple of viruses/trojans after removing BitDefender. Actually the trojan it found was Zerospyware. I thought Zerospyware was a legit antispyware but maybe it's not.

It is there in Returnil System Safe, Spyware Terminator.
In my personal experience it does detect something. In my personal experience it is at par with Outpost, Forticlient.

now if they sell it for 5 bucks that would not hurt to buy it and help them improve but 30 bucks is too much
