DriveSentry free no more?

It's changed names and the price has gone up by 50% - the 10 has become 15! (I see Bubba moved my post. Please note I am practising British sarcasm. I have no problem with paying $15 for a lifetime licence)

File synchronization looks to be the only new thing.

So it seems... Some software applications begin as being freely available, until they become more popular, and then the folks behind them cease to provide them for free.

This may be one of those cases.

 

What of the users here who already paid $10.00?
Will they now have to pay another $15.00 to get a license?

I also noticed the name change.
Drive Sentry Security Suite.
I think of a suite has having all the major components, an av, anti-malware and firewall.
This suite lacks the firewall and the rest of DS looks basically the same unless I'm missing something here.
So how is this a suite now?

 

When I remember well, the deal was $10.00 for lifetime signature updates.
Let's wait on reaction of DriveSentry.

 

The $15 lifetime license is cheap.
The only caveat being that nobody ever knows for sure what the lifetime of a program is going to be.

As far as I can tell, it's no longer available as freeware.
I don't see trial version either.

No trial available for the suite, and no download for the standalone app, only at download.com and others.

And, that's exactly what I meant. That's why I said some and not all.

People can't expect software developers to always provide something for free. Everything costs money. Nothing comes out free.

Whether people paid the product in a direct way or not, that's something else. But, everything has a cost, and simply because no one works for free, unless doing some charity, and even then...

P.S: I do believe, though, that any software developer should warn their users before hand of any change on the way the product is made available or stops being available.

 

New version 3.3.0.4 is free. You need to buy a license after 30 days to continue to receive updates. If you don't buy it you can still use it but no updates. Link here:

$15.00 is cheap as has already been stated.
It amazes me that no where for regular merchandise can you get it for free, yet on the web it's expected to be free.
It's still a product, put out with someone's creative ability, time and effort.
They have a right to charge for their product and their investment.
It's great that some company's can afford to this, such as Comodo and Avast, but not all can.
Charging a small fee for one's product is not greed but for them its survival.

I'm afraid to tell you that open source software doesn't mean its free. It only means people have access to the source code, and according to the license it abides by.

There's free open source software, and there's paid open source software. The same way there's free closed source software and paid closed source software.

Either way, the people developing those applications are either paid or get monetary help somewhere else than your own wallet.
Initially some projects may come out 100% free, but if the project turns out to achieve a higher stage, and unless the developer(s) can bear the costs, then it sure will need a source of money, be it by making the initial free product a paid product, ads on their official sites, donations, etc.
