    Hi Guys,

While trying to make a backup, DriveImage sees the intended drives to backup, it also sees the destination drive.

I get backup job running then

trying to create shadow for C: ... <never says succeeded, per You tube video>

    Next the program is frozen.

VSS service, & MS Shadow service both started & running. This computer is <not a server> home machine, running XP Pro w/SP3. M$ talks of a fix for servers, SP1 dated 2005.

It seems DriveImage 'fails' because it cannot succeed, at making a shadow.

    Help!

    Take Care

I once tried this software is it the successor of powerquests drive image?
I see no sense in backup software without bootable media like cd, dvd.

    Hi GF,

Both MS Shadow Copy, & Volume Shadow Copy were running + I could stop/start these services. Next ctrl+alt+del & I saw "VSSVC.exe" sucking up memory.

Next two machines both with search for hidden files 'enabled' I cannot find:

    oleaut.dll nor can i find oleaut32.dll

    Also I don't understand 'runtime.org's comment:

"Without VSS you still can make images with locking or without locking."

With all the above services "started" & VSSVC.exe showing.

Drive image craps out at the following:

Trying to create a shadow for C:

Note with VSS off it still craps out at the same place

    Thanks & Take Care

It is not a successor to PowerQuest Drive Image. That was purchased by Symantec and they tinkered with it and called it Ghost.

DriveImage XML is limited in use without a boot disk but it is easy to make one with BartPE and the plugin from Runtime Software.

Actually, I believe that BartPE boot disk has the plugin already installed but it is for the older DriveImage XML (prior to the recent release of version 2.01). A plugin for version 2.01 is available on the Runtime site if you are using that version.

I have run both and cannot tell any difference but the older version will not open Images created by Version 2.01.

A boot disk is only needed when restoring the C: drive. Any other drive can be restored without one by opening the image from the program.

*You were quick to catch that! Hot image referred to locked or shadow. About those files I'll need to check.

Are we discussing your new laptop? No nLite correct? Are Acronis and Dixml both installed?

Does C encompass the entire disk? Yes? What size is she?

Does Bart allow you to image with Dixml *outside* Windows?

    Hi GF,

Yes tis the laptop. Never got n-lite working abandoned it, for BartPE. Acronis = desktop, DriveImage XML= laptop. Note regarding Acronis I'm using ver 9 & have no intention of upgrading. And Acronis is a one machine license only. Laptop has C & D <both ntfs> total 250 GB. D:\ is very small. Dixml has a plugin that slides right into Bart, so I think so.

    Hi Rico,

The file (relevance unknown) oleaut32.dll is present on my OEM laptop install. Your laptop .... Dell? Rough image size?

    Good Morning GF,

    Laptop=Fujitsu, Image size=?

One area which may be problematic is the laptop has installed 1st Horizons 'Rollback RX'. Choosing Di XML's 'try shadow first' results in error msg. (can't find the paper I wrote the msg on) anywho the error led to Google which led me to a blog for Di XML, where the problem seems to be more than one instance of shadow ocuring, resulting in Di XML failure. The following have all failed:

    safe mode windows
ms config hide ms services then kill all + stop all startups
    diagnostic start up

When I fire up the laptop (after am coffee) I'll run:

    vssadmin list shadows

hopefully this will show something I can kill, which allows DI XML to work.

Note: Choosing Di XML's 'try shadow first' will allow the backup to proceed, but posts the following warning < image may be damaged > close but no cigar

    Take Care Amigo

I saw the blog, (he's) still stumped. I did however read - disable system restore, reboot, retry. If not Rico we'll work a different angle.

    Hi GF,

Vssadmin list shadows = no shadows running & Di XMK fail.

KB923628 does not match windows version, can't seem to find XP pro KB for vss?

    2. Registered the following files:
    Go to Command Prompt
    Go to C:\Windows\System 32 Prompt

    Net stop vss
    Net stop swprv

    regsvr32 ole32.dll/i <file not found>
    regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
    Vssvc /Register
    regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
    regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
    regsvr32 es.dll
    regsvr32 stdprov.dll
    regsvr32 vssui.dll <file not found>
    regsvr32 msxml.dll
    regsvr32 msxml3.dll
    regsvr32 msxml4.dll

    Net start vss
    Net start swprv

    Reboot again and check.

Di XML worked fine - just a quick backup to see if it worked
(same windows session) format ext. USB HDD. Re-start Di XML fail - Ugh Thought it was fixed. Try the Regsvr32 procedure again Fail.

    Now running sfc /scannow <fingers crossed>

I've seen some comments about re-installing "COM+", not sure if this has been successful.

    Take Care
    Rico

PS - System restore was disabled upon install of Rollback RX

Sans svcpak hiccup scannow had crossed my mind. Trouble is it's guesswork determining who it'll work for on casual suggestion. In the meantime I grabbed a few plugin's and made my own Bart disk. Tell me, is that the way she work's .... while Windows is UP!? How many gig's are you trying to image?

PS - Having much success ;) *outside Window's* with :shifty: PING! I must've overlooked something creating Bart.

    Hi GF,

SFC /scannow did nothing to help.

What I'm doing is this windows session, proceeding with the backup, regardless of the warning message (see previous quote for exact warning), & should the hdd fail, use the BartPE with Di XML plugin to restore to the new hdd. Backing up approx 20gb.

    Rico,

You wanna image from *within* Window's? Forget trying to work out the reason your box doesn't like Runtime's offering and move on to the forum's unanimous freebie - Paragon Drive Backup Express. Unanimous having observed those who appear to have plenty of imaging experience.

    Hi GF,

Excellent idea, I was just at Paragon's site, will re-visit soon. Thanks!

I thought I had it figured out boot from Bart then make the backup. That does not work, it does not see the real c: drive. Next DriveImage starts backup after sector 63, this excludes boot stuff, so in the event of hdd replacement Di xml is less than desirable.

    Thanks Amigo

    Hi Guys,

BartPE lacks sata driver hence my c & d drives went unseen in my new laptop. Next I tried "UBCD4Win" (IMHO better than BartPE) which has the sata driver. I installed DriveImage XML plugin on or into the UBCD4win. After completion of the boot disc; I could use or make backups & restore from the boot disc using Di XML. Very cool, next I deleted the DI XML from the hdd.

Anyway 'Paragon Backup Express' will be my main backup, till? Then I can fall back & replace it with UBCD4Win/DiXML combo.

Rico you can add your sata drivers in bartPE very easily. Simple add your drivers in the folder Drivers/SCSIAdapter/ before creating the bartpe CD and they will be integrated in it.

Personally I prefer Reatogo-X-PE Boot CD for creating my bartpe cds.
