no backwards compatibility is a big turn off tbh.

 

Is there an easy way to create a bootable CD in this version?

I did not have trouble restoring files from 2.0 to 1.21 or vice versa. Am I missing something that is going to cause a problem in the future?

It would appear that the answer is no. Too bad. This is THE reason I have never used DI and can't recommend it to anyone I know. BartPE is beyond anyone I personally know and I don't want the hassle. (I know it's free so I'm not really complaining per se. It's just that there are other very afforable alternatives that make life much easier...)

 

Compared to all the other solutions how others drive image fare? What are some of the cheaper alternatives that do a good job and are easier to use?

If IFW images are to DVD, they are bootable/restoreable by default. If one uses a 2nd hard drive, the restore CD is created by using the MakeDisk executable which is bundled with IFW. IFW is simple to use but it can also be highly customized too. (One of the image creation apps I use is a cousin of IFW, Image for DOS. A great program but it not as easy to use as IFW.)

 

DI XML is OK if you want a free application. But if you want an application with features, they cost money.

DI XML has good compression but it's slow. Creating an image takes 3 times longer than IFW. Using Fast compression is quicker, half the time of the standard compression, but not much compressing gets done.

DI XML can't image hidden partitions which is a problem for me.

DI XML can't validate images which is a major failing. I've seen several threads where an image validation prior to restoring the image would have prevented the OS partition from being deleted.

 

Somewhere on the Runtime site, I got the impression that this is either a beta version or an unperfected release.

I made an image with it last night and it is OK but I am going to continue with my older version (1.21) for a while before switching over completely.

Also, I downloaded the BartPE plug-In and it appears to be about the same as the older versions with the exception of the executable file which has a more recent date. I have not made a BartPE disk with this one yet.

I have not been able to get the help files or documentation files (*.chm) to ever work with any version of DriveImage XML. They have a question mark on them while in the folder and I cannot get them to open. Anyone here had better luck?
