Delayed write failed

TI9 ver 2337 windows XP usb1 external usb drive.

When attempting backup of image I get the "Delayed write failed" message and "windows was unable to save the file I:\$mft.
I am trying to back up to a partition on the drive

please help!

 

Are you really using a USB 1 drive? It may be too slow for the TONS of data that Acronis gives it.

I have seen these errors on my USB drives in the past. This was the result of "user error"

I had put 7200 RPM drives (250 GB) in a fan-less USB 2.0 enclosure. Initially it worked fine, but as I backed up more data, it started giving me these errors.

I finally diagnosed that the problem was caused by the drives overheating. Once I put them in a drive enclosure with a cooling fan, they worked flawlessly.

 

Interesting. I have ocasionally gotten this error message with an external hard drive and wandered why it occurs. There is a quite small fan inside my hard drive enclosure but it may not be enough if excessive heat causes the problem. I might have to try a new external enclosure which gives better ventilation.

There is a fanless enclosure called 'Metal Gearbox' which has a mesh around the sides which means the hard drive gets almost as much ventilation as if it were not enclosed which has worked flawlessly in the past for me but I got my present enclosure because the Metal Gearbox model did not come in one which took Sata drives but there is now a model that accomodates Sata drives which I may try switching to.

 

This problem has been around for a long time and as general USB problem not necessarily True Image.

FYI....I had the same issue - it went away if I temporarily disabled my Norton Internet Security firewall while copying the data.

 

It seems there are many theories on the causes of the problem. I used the link provided and someone claims if you have a program called Any DVD installed (I have it installed) you need to uninstall it before applying Windows updates to avoid the delayed write error message which seems strange to me. Funny I got the delayed write error message just now after coming out of standby with my external drive turned off. I've got some reading to do at the link site to acquaint myself with all the opinions on it. Thanks for the link Seekforever.

God damn it! I tried one of the suggestions at the link site about setting a paging file for the external drive and now I'm getting the error message galore! I've also noticed that when the error message occurs the external drive disappears completely in Windows Explorer and Control Panel so it locks the external drive up. I tried another solution at the link site-going to: Regedit/HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management and setting the 'LargeSystemCash' value to 0 and it seems to have helped. I don't seem to be having the Delayed write error any more or if it does occur it is now infrequent.

Setting the 'LargeSystemCash' value to 0 also solved another problem I was having on shutdown when an error message to do with an ATI program regularly came up with a message something like 'The instruction at 0x77f41d24 referenced memory at 0x00000000 could not be read’ etc. This doesn't happen any more after changing the 'LargeSystemCash' value to 0.

 

Thanks for all the replies. I'm happy to write that since discarding the USB hub I can now create image via USB 1 ! it is obviously slow but does the job!

I am now happy to buy the full product as this was the trial version

 

I should also add for the benefit of anyone else that has the problem that I made the registry changes suggested to no avail.
My drive is a Seagate 300gb USB/Firewire

 

I'm almost certain you meant to refer to the 'LargeSystemCache' value !

 

I found out the hard way that those REALLY CHEAP USB hubs are not worth buying. I have now gotten rid of two of them.

I forked out $30 for a Compaq USB hub, and no longer get warning messages like
"one of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned"

 

Also, the recommendation that NEC chipsets for USB are by far the most reliable and "bug" free seems to get alot of mileage at http://www.usbman.com/ if the choice ever comes up.
