I'm a bit confused about DNS provider options.

    Current settings:
    - Router set to Comodo DNS.
    - Windows set to "Obtain DNS server automatically".

Is there any advantage or disadvantage to set the Windows DNS setting to another discrete provider, such as Norton DNS?

    Thanks for your help!

well if you set windows to a DNS it will over ride the router. but ur current setup should be more than fine.

If you set it at the router, then that is all you need to set it for. That is the advantage to setting it at the router level.

As for which DNS is better...it is difficult to determine efficacy of DNS, especially in terms of malicious site blocking, phishing blocking, cache poising prevention, DOS prevention, etc. The few tests I have seen are not very conclusive at all. The end result is you will always need solid malware protection (be it whitelist, blacklist, or both) on the actual computers on your network, as DNS blacklists tend to block a very small percent of the malicious websites from what I have observed.

I personally use Comodo DNS, but a lot of people on here use Norton and like it. I think the important thing is to move away from your ISP DNS; at least that is more important than which alternate one you chose, for the matter.
