Hacker accused of hacking and extorting companies, selling stolen data online

Bulgarian law enforcement has arrested on Wednesday a local hacker going by the name of Instakilla on accusations of hacking, extorting companies, and selling hacked data online.
The hacker was identified as a young Bulgarian male. His name was not released to the public, and he is currently detained on a three-day arrest warrant.

Although he was not directly involved in the hack of the Bulgarian National Revenue Agency (NRA) in the summer of 2019, Instakilla is one of the hackers who tracked down the database and later offered it for download on a popular hacking forum, helping the data spread across the hacker community.
Earlier this year, the hacker also took credit for hacking the forum of Stalker, a Russian first-person shooter online game, from where he stole more than 1.2 million user records, which he later put up for sale on a hacking forum.

A Portuguese computer whiz accused of leaking a series of confidential documents belonging to various soccer clubs has been released from custody.

Rui Pinto has been moved to a safe house in Portugal after spending 18 months behind lock and key while he awaits his trial before a Portuguese court.
The 32-year-old was arrested in Hungary in March 2019 on charges related to hacking, violation of correspondence, computer sabotage, illegitimate access, and attempted extortion. Pinto had been resident in Hungary for four years at the time of his arrest.

Portugal state broadcaster RTP and other media reported that Pinto was released from police custody in Lisbon late Friday.

A Hawaii man accused of sending hundreds of people to a North Salt Lake home for unwanted services like plumbing, pizza delivery and prostitution has pleaded guilty in federal court to a charge of cyberstalking,
Loren M. Okamura, 44, entered the plea July 27 in U.S. District Court, the latest turn in a case police have called “stalking on steroids.”

Police arrested him last year after they said he used apps to cover up his phone location data in order to relentlessly stalk Walt Gilmore and his adult daughter.
A federal grand jury indicted Okamura on charges of cyberstalking, making interstate threats and transporting a person over state lines for the purpose of prostitution.

A 25-year-old Sydney female has been sentenced to a maximum two years and three months in jail for stealing over 100,000 'Ripple' cryptocurrency in January 2018.

Kathryn Nguyen and an associate hacked into a 56-year-old man’s cryptocurrency account and swapped the two-factor authentication to her mobile phone, according to News Corp.
She then transferred the large sum of cryptocurrency to an overseas exchange where it was traded for bitcoin and shuffled into different wallets.

A New Jersey man has been charged with trying to hire a hitman on the dark net to kill a child with whom he exchanged sexually explicit images.

John Michael Musbach was arrested on Thursday for allegedly paying $20,000 in Bitcoin to have his then 14-year-old victim murdered. The 31-year-old Haddonfield resident was charged with one count of murder-for-hire.
Using an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) website, Musbach requested and received sexually explicit videos and photographs of his victim. Musbach also sent indecent images and videos of himself to the victim.

The FBI thwarted the plans of 27-year-old Russian national Egor Igorevich Kriuchkov to recruit an insider in a Nevada company, persuade him to plant malware on their network, and then ransom the company under threat that he would leak data stolen from their systems.

Kriuchkov was arrested on August 22, 2020, in Los Angeles after he got a phone call from an FBI agent and tried to leave the U.S.

"After being contacted by the FBI, Kriuchkov drove overnight from Reno to Los Angeles," a Department of Justice press release says. "Kriuchkov asked an acquaintance to purchase an airline ticket for him in an attempt to fly out of the country."

According to court documents, Kriuchkov tried to recruit an employee of the targeted company and to persuade him to deploy an unknown malware strain on the company’s computer network via a USB drive or using an email with a malicious attachment.
Foiled plans = five years in prison
The FBI got wind of this planned operation from the targeted company during Kriuchkov's attempts to persuade the employee (CHS1) to act as an insider between July 15 and August 22.

A Ghanaian citizen residing in Tamale, Ghana, has been extradited to stand trial for an indictment charging him with wire fraud, money laundering, computer fraud and aggravated identity theft.

On Aug. 23, 2017, a federal grand jury in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee indicted Maxwell Peter, 27, whose given name is Maxwell Atugba Abayeta, and others with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, conspiracy to commit computer fraud and aggravated identity theft.

The indictment alleges that various Africa-based co-conspirators committed, or caused to be committed, a series of intrusions into the servers and email systems of a Memphis-based real estate company in June and July 2016.

Using sophisticated anonymization techniques, including the use of spoofed email addresses and Virtual Private Networks, the co-conspirators identified large financial transactions, initiated fraudulent email correspondence with relevant business parties and then redirected closing funds through a network of U.S.-based money mules to final destinations in Africa.

Commonly referred to as business-email compromise, or BEC, this aspect of the scheme caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in losses to companies and individuals in Memphis.
In addition to BEC, the defendant is also charged with perpetrating romance scams, fraudulent-check scams, gold-buying scams, advance-fee scams and credit card scams.

Seven other individuals have pleaded guilty to being involved in these schemes. Benard E. Okorhi, 41, was extradited in March 2020 from Canada, and is detained pending trial. Two others, Olufalojimi Abegunde, 33, and Javier Luis Ramos-Alonso, 30, were convicted in March after a seven-day trial in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee. Abegunde received a 78-month sentence and Ramos-Alonso received a 31-month sentence for their roles in the scheme. Several individuals remain at large.

Sudhish Kasaba Ramesh was charged with intentionally accessing a protected computer without authorisation and recklessly causing damage after he accessed Cisco’s cloud infrastructure and deleted 456 virtual machines (VMs).

Several months after resigning from the company in April 2018, he concsiously deployed a piece of code from his Google Cloud Project that destroyed these VMs in Cisco’s cloud infrastructure, hosted by Amazon Web Services (AWS).
This shutdown lasted two weeks and caused Cisco to spend around $1.4 million in time to restore the damage, as well as more than $1 million in refunds to consumers.

“Cisco addressed the issue in September 2018 as quickly as possible, ensured no customer information was lost or compromised, and implemented additional safeguards,” a Cisco spokesperson told IT Pro.

A collaborative raid between a half-dozen global law enforcement agencies has struck what may be a fatal blow to one of the world’s biggest piracy outfits. Agents at the Southern District of New York (SDNY) announced on Wednesday that three individuals have been arrested and charged with copyright infringement as part of the sting.

The broader target of the raids was the Sparks Group, an international piracy ring accused of illegally distributing movies and television shows on the Internet since at least 2011.
SDNY indictments were filed against three Sparks members: 39-year-old Umar Ahmad, aka “Artist”; 36-year-old Jonatan Correa, aka “Raid”; and 50-year-old George Bridi.

Sources have told Torrent Freak that the coordinated global raids triggered “turmoil” across the piracy scene this week, forcing interconnected group members to go into hiding.

Elon Musk has confirmed that Tesla thwarted a "serious" cyber attack at its Gigafactory in Nevada after a Russian national allegedly attempted to bribe an employee to install ransomware on the company’s network.

The US Justice Department released a complaint earlier this week about an attempted malware attack against an unnamed company in Sparks, Nevada. While the complaint didn't name Tesla specifically, Musk confirmed via Twitter that his company was the target, adding that this was a "serious attack".
The unnamed employee met with Kriuchkov, who allegedly offered to pay him $1 million to introduce malware into the company's network. The employee informed Tesla, which then notified the FBI.

A University of Virginia (UVA) researcher has been arrested and charged with a criminal complaint for accessing a computer without authorization, or exceeding authorization to obtain data from a protected computer, as well as theft of trade secrets, the Department of Justice reported late last week.

Chinese national Haizhou Hu, who was researching bio-mimics and fluid dynamics at UVA, attempted to board a flight to China on Aug. 25. A routine screening at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport revealed Hu was allegedly in possession of "bio-inspired research simulation software code" that he was not authorized to have. He was arrested a few days later.
The code was the product of years of research and development resources from members of UVA's academic community, officials report.

A man charged as part of a business email compromise money laundering scheme that allegedly defrauded victims out of $2 million over the course of at least six years is set to face a judge in U.S. court in the Southern District of New York.

The man, Habeeb Audu, who is a dual citizen of Nigeria and the U.K., was extradited from London last week for his alleged involvement in multiple money laundering and fraud scams, some of which leveraged information stolen during previous business email compromises, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

One of the operations in which Audu was allegedly involved ran from 2013 to 2018. Audu and several co-conspirators duped banks into giving them access to victim bank accounts to steal money, according to the Justice Department.

They did so by using stolen personal information to deceive the banks into thinking they were legitimate account holders, according to court documents. They then supplemented those efforts with a phone number spoofing service and voice-altering technology to trick banks into thinking they were the legitimate account holders.
Business email compromise scams, in which hackers spoof email addresses, send malicious phishing emails, or imitate legitimate vendors, siphon significant amounts of money from victims annually.

A 26-year-old Aurora man, Bryan Connor Herrell, was sentenced Tuesday in California federal court to 11 years in prison for working as an administrator in an illegal dark web marketplace.

Herrell, according to court documents from the U.S. Department of Justice, was a moderator for AlphaBay, an online site that engaged in hundreds of thousands of illicit transactions for guns, drugs, stolen identity information, credit card numbers and other illegal items. Herrell settled disputes between vendors and purchasers on the site, and also served to protect AlphaBay from being defrauded by either.

“This sentence serves as further proof that criminals cannot hide behind technology to break the law,” said U.S. Attorney McGregor Scott of the Eastern District of California.

Terry Shawn Petrill, 48, pleaded guilty last November to stealing 41 Cisco network switches that had been purchased in part with federal funds, and that he auctioned nine of them on eBay and other websites between June 2015 and August 2018, court records stated.

"I hope to be acquitted because I am a whistleblower and I acted in good faith," the 31-year-old hacker told Der Spiegel, one of the publications that published the material from the Football Leaks in 2016.

According to the indictment, from about July 16, 2020, to about Aug. 22, 2020, Kriuchkov conspired with associates to recruit an employee to introduce malware into the computer network of the employee’s company.

In September 2019, Minang was sentenced to 46 months in prison after pleading guilty to his role in a separate business email compromise (BEC) scheme.
Minang conspired with others to open numerous bank accounts in Massachusetts in the name of sham companies, as part of an apparent BEC scheme.

Through the use of fraudulent invoices and spoofed email accounts, Minang conspired to trick the victims of the scheme into wiring hundreds of thousands of dollars to bank accounts under his control. Minang and his co-conspirators then transferred funds from the accounts to others located overseas.

A judge in the Eastern District of Missouri on Monday sentenced Wyatt, 39, to five years in prison after he pleaded guilty to assisting a hacking crew known as The Dark Overlord. Wyatt, who had previously entered a plea of not guilty, participated in a court hearing by phone from a jail in St. Charles County, Missouri.
