It seems that some files of RSS have gone corrupt and the message "RSS 2011 core system is not available" is now appearing that I can no longer access the RSS interface to disable RSS and uninstall it. I have booted into Safe Mode, run msconfig, unchecked RSS and tried to uninstall it again (both in Safe mode and normal mode) but to no avail. What else can I do now to reinstall RSS or get it working again? Thanks!

Although I have RSS disabled in Safe Mode, the message "Windows installer service is not accessible in Safe Mode ..." appears when I try to uninstall it, so I am not able to start the uninstallation process.

I don't advice to uninstall this kind of software with Revo or similar uninstallers.

Try install again; and uninstall with their own uninstaller only.

    From their site...

Help! I cannot UNINSTALL RSS Pro/Free 2011, RVS Pro 2011, or RVS 2010 properly!

As security solutions, RSS Pro/Free 2011, RVS Pro 2011, and RVS 2010 install kernel mode drivers to provide the applicable Virtual Mode and malware protection capabilities. It is STRONGLY recommended that you DO NOT attempt to remove the product manually. Also, it is STRONGLY recommended that you DO NOT use any third-party uninstallers, which may be very useful for traditional products, but which may cause stability problems with your computer as those we have tested all fail to remove the drivers in our products properly!

    Please follow the recommended approach:

IMPORTANT! Ensure that System Safe (RVS 2010) or Virtual Mode (RSS Pro/Free 2011 and RVS Pro 2011) is turned OFF
Uninstall the product from your within your Control Panel using standard Windows mechanisms (ref: Add/Remove Programs or Programs > Uninstall a Program)
If the above does not help, then please download the latest version of RVS or RSS, upgrade as appropriate, and then uninstall it as described in #2. We have improved the installer to detect and correct the most common types of damage that can result in the inability to install due to remnants of a previous RVS/RSS installation which was improperly or incompletely uninstalled. NOTE! This process may require multiple passes to completely repair the damage so please be patient.

If all the above fails for any reason, please send us the following reports from the problem computer to our technical support address for deeper analysis and troubleshooting:

    RVS 2010:

    C:\Windows\rvs3.log
    C:\Windows\rvs3-inst.log

    RSS Pro/Free 2011 and RVS Pro 2011:

    rvs3.log
    rvs3.inst.log
Directories per supported version of Windows:

    Windows XP and Server 2003: C:\Documents and Settings\all users\application data\returnil\rvs3\log
    Windows Vista, 7 and server 2008: C:\ProgramData\Returnil\RVS3\log

    All versions:

MSINFO32 report: Click START > RUN > Type MSINFO32. On the System Information screen click FILE > Export and then save the file where you can find it to attach to your e-mail.

    Hi Rodimus,
Please open a support ticket by sending us the following logs via e-mail to support (dash) tech (at) returnil (dot) com:

The rvs3.log and rvs3.inst.log files in the following folder:

    * C:\ProgramData\Returnil\RVS3\log
    * MSINFO32 report: Click START > RUN/search as appropriate > Type MSINFO32 > enter. On the System Information screen click FILE > Export and then save the file where you can find it and attach it to the support ticket.

If this issue is due to some form of driver conflict, we will assist with manual removal instructions if needed to resolve the immediate uninstall issue.

I have been changing and removing drive letters (not the system or boot drives) and it seems that this has caused problems for RSS. Now I booted into safe mode and restored the drive letters I had when RSS was still functioning a few days ago and I managed to get it working again.

Anyway, thank you for all your advices.

    Hi,
Yes, you should be careful of doing this as it could lead to the issue you note. With the addition of multi-disk virtualization, the "protected disk" can be more than just the System.

The way to do this if you are going to make a permanent change to the existing drive letters manually is:

    1. Uninstall RSS
    2. Change the drive letters as required
    3. Reinstall RSS

This will ensure that the program is set with the drive assignment lineup as it will be going forward. If you are simply testing drive letter assignments, doing as you have reported will resolve the issue.

NOTE: this is not an expected scenario as the key of the virtualization is to maintain a clean state on the drives added to the Virtual Mode protection and one of the design elements was that the system would be relatively static as re drive letter assignments once RSS/RVS are installed.

    Mike
