Bootable Flash Drive

I have a bootable flash drive that loads a config.sys file. I have several options one of which I would like to load trueimage. I have tried using Loadlin.exe which lets you mount a linux kernel and ramdisk to a dos partition. I am using the kernel.dat and ramdisk.dat as my kernel and initrd respectively. I can't figure out how to make this work. My ultimate goal is to have all my utilities on one flash drive (dos partition) such as fdisk, killdisk, partition magic, and acronis. PLEASE HELP.

 

To make a bootable TI flash drive is pretty much hit and miss, to me anyway. What worked for me is to format the flash drive as FAT - not FAT 32. Then go through the procedure for making "bootable rescue media". In the process you will get to choose the flash drive as the media.

I don't know if you will be able to put the additional files you want and have it accessible as if your flash drive works with this process, all it does is exactly what the TI bootable CD does.

Also, when I did my flash drive, I found one brand didn't work (a PNY) while a Sandisk Cruzer Micro did.

Perhaps if you examine the files that are in the TI rescue media you might incorporate that into your bootable flash drive.

 

I can create a bootable flash drive no problem using the HP Format tool, however, that creates a dos boot disk, which is fine, but I would like to incorperate trueimage into my config.sys file menu. This would mean I have to find a way to virtually boot linux after the fact that I am in dos. I found a utility called "loadlin.exe", but I just can't find the correct syntax to execute acronis via loadlin.exe. Please let me know if anyone has ANY suggestions.

Have you had any luck with this? I too used the hp format tool as its was the only way to get my usb stick bootable. Acronis' own format does something to the stick that makes it so it won't boot.

 

Frustrated USB Guy: This is what I did (finally got it to work). Format your USB stick with the HP software as a FAT drive, and *as a system disk*. You'll need a dos/windows floppy handy. When this is done, fire up the Acronis media builder software and go as far where it complains that your usb device has files on it, and when asked, *don't* format the drive. Proceed with the install as normal. This worked for me.
