I've carefully prepared a new, comprehensive, up-to-date list of highly recommended, must-have programs, free tools and utilities for Linux desktops, across a wide range of categories, with multiple screenshots, examples, tutorials, and guides. Over 40 types of software, more than 50 apps, all lovingly tested and personally favored. You will like this a lot.

    tnx for the article!

    i love Gufw.
i just leave it default, which protects more than just the default firewall settings.

with it enabled, you get similar results as the Vista firewall.
only the "Ping Reply" test fails at GRG Shields Up site.

Agree with k3b and firefox they're just awesome. ktorrent, clementine, audacious and dolphin are also personal faves of mine. All very powerful applications packed with options for those tweakers amongst us.

As for other, I have a big love of fluxbox.
