Backups of SQL Server and Exchange

Hello all,

We are currently considering the use of Acronis True Image Enterprise Server V8.0 in our multi-server environment.

As well as basic file and print servers we have several Microsoft Exchange and SQL Servers and would like to get some feedback from people who have used TIS to back these up. Has TIS provided integrity of these systems for backup and restore? Does the "database support" and relevant batch files functionality work well? Are there any specific batch files for these tasks? Does the stopping and starting of services have any major effect on users?

Any feedback would be most welcome.

stopping and starting of services wil result in service loss.

therefor you need to image at night. Batch files for stopping and starten you need to create yourself.

These batch files can be appointed to a true image backup job.

I use it for SQL backup. Until the batch functionality came out to stop and start services, I had no issue creating or restoring an image without doing this. I would definitely use the batch process to be safe and it is the supported option, but I have not used it and it was successful.

did you mean i don't have to stop the services for both my SQL and Exchange servers? you mean i simply just create the images for both and have them scheduled to run at any given time?

Also ATIS mentions "Real-time server disk backup", does this mean i can have it back up in real time continously? can some body explain this to me?

 

What John said was that before TI gave the option to auto start/stop services via batch, he was backing up and restoring Exchange stores and Sql databases with no problem, I've not had to do real restores on any of my Exchange2000 or SQl servers, but the testing that I have done tells me that I won't have any real trouble with data loss or corruption.

The real time backup is just that.. TI will backup while the server, service, or files are in use.. so you don't have to kill the server or your users while you backup data. It will not backup continuously, you'd need Evault or something similar for that.. it will only backup when you schedule it to, and then stop when the job is finished.

so i have the option to run the batch to stop the server services if i would like to otherwise i would just have TI run according to the schedule that i set. is that correct?

The best TI can do for you is restoring to the latest backup, let's say i schedule to for T1 to run everynight. If anything happens between the next day, i basically can't restore or another word loses whatever data for that day. am i right?

That's why i have been looking for something to continuosly backup the server so that i can restore to the point the server crashes. BackupExec seems to do that and i am not sure either because i have asked and nobody responses. what's Evault? is that some kind of agent or add on from Acronis to do continous backup?

i am basically looking for experienced user input that use TI to backup both SQL and Exchange. If TI is the best cost effective solution to backup and this is what most users use!
