Ah, gotcha...thanks for clarifying and no, I don't believe Avira has 99.9% detection rate. Not even close.

Right. Particularly when the guy doing the review is a moderator,at another forum with a notoriously under-performing AV,and a terminal case of "Avira Envy".
And questonable, to say the least, ethics.
    (the company,not necessarily the reviewer.).

I ended up buying Avira Premium Security Suite. I've always used free antivirus products previously (particularly Avast!)- but this time around I decided Antivir was worth the cash. It was a tough decision between this and Avast 5- they have both launched top notch products this year.

I too bought AVIRA PREMIUM 3 weeks ago. AVAST 5 FREE was unworkable on my PC, it was terrible to install (you sometimes have to boot two or three times to install it) and to uninstall it it's a pain (you have to use their cleaner uninstaller utility, even so after you go manually...). No, I'm satisfied with AVIRA, it does the job and it's worth all respect won by 100 000 000 users.

Avira detected 99.3% of samples in the latest av-comparatives test which is a typical result.

TheIgster your tests were/are an interesting point of view from a user's perspective. I was pleased at the time to follow your experiments even though Avira didn't seem to excel in your tests. It is however not fair to rerun tests with Avira 10 with your guidelines namely all applications at default levels. It is well known that Avira performs very well with max levels.

Why on earth should I believe you or TheIgster and not AV Comparatives?

ALL apps are tested the same way. If Avira is more effective at max levels, then ship it that way. Default is default.

Do I have to add "update job" to update my AntiVir free as it was in the previous version? i'm asking because i see "automatic update" in options, and "automatic update all 1 day" is marked, but after that time no update was performed.

I don't think AV comparatives tests on Avira are done with its security level at max, rather its done at default and consistently, Avira has outperformed others in matter of detection.

Good Morning ! Just purchased Anti Vir Premium Ver.10. So far absolutely satisfied with it's performance. The Gui is just the appropriate touch of eye candy, understated; but the layout is more user friendly and Luke File Walker and the scanning component are basically the same but none the less quick and efficient. An excellent product overall. Sincerely...Securon

If you look at AV-Comparatives report 25 February 2010 on page 5 , it shows that they tested Avira 9 Premium.

Avira asked that testing be done with heuristics set to high/advanced. As well the vendor asked that the informational warnings of packers not be counted as detections. Both these requests were granted.

Note that the number of FP's were recorded now as "few".
Other vendors (not all) made similar requests.

I have decided to get the 3 pack of Avira here :) , I'm just not sure whether to stick to the AV and use a 3rd party firewall, or to get the whole suite.

You guys have good experience level, can you say how good the suite firewall is? Good enough? (I don't think I need that sandbox element in free comodo, as I'm behaviorally safe)

There is a in/out firewall with windows 7 so really you could just fine tune that and skip the overhead of the suite.

You have SAS so ensure you don't have that on Real Time detection as well as Avira.

IMHO, just stay with the AV of Avira set all defaults to maximum detection ensure the built in FW with windows is turned on, run SAS on demand from time to time and enjoy life.

Have you got an imaging backup set up working?

Everybody system is different, if people had default set to max there would be no adjustment range to adjust to to acomadate the differences in peoples computers.

Sure, but my point is with the testing that I do, that there should be no reason for me to adjust the levels of detection. That simply would not be fair to other AV's that I test. If Avira is shipped a certain way, that's the way they want it installed by default and the way 99% of the people out there would run it. The "average" user wouldn't know the first thing about changing the settings.

Yeah completely agree with you Igster, no average user visits Wilders and other security forums to know information about AV config:) :)

thanks everyone for the thread information. Had a bit of a panic/WTF moment earlier in the thread with the zero day malware malarky postings, but now happy enough to have Avira as a good KIS replacement - I like it, its fast

I decided to get the suite to keep the firewall and AV all together, for convenience mainly, and have bought the 3 pack license

    Cheers

Surely, Avira does have most potential of the AVs out there if you're willing to adjust your security settings. But I agree with some of the guys in this tread, you shouldn't need to adjust the settings in order to get the most of your AV.

Have you taken a statistically significant poll to determine the computer savvy of the "average user"? Or are you omniscient? ;)

I have many friends via NARFE, Lions Club, church, etc. None of them visit Wilders. I "surveyed" 37 of them verbally. All but 12 of them DO have an AV, DO keep it updated, & DO understand the need for adjusting settings to their particular situation. Not a statistically significant survey, but I'll bet it's a lot more fact-based than the opinions too often expressed in threads such as this.

The tendency to proclaim the computer-ignorance of the "average" person borders on arrogance & elitism.

I also agree that far too often there is a tendency to see the average user as an absolute idiot unable to perform the most basic routines: the very act of choosing and buying a particular AV implies enough interest to predict at least once a perfunctory reading of the setting up possibilities. It isn't rocket science after all.

I'm also convinced that if Avira had two very simple choices on the main GUI, something like "Normal settings" and "High settings" would probably make it easier even for those people who refuse to read anything.

that is the perfect answer. It would be the most simplistic approach. A high setting that tweaks all for the most secure setup. Or medium for a regular approach. People get lost trying to tweak 50 settings for max, and we all know that to much of one can impact another setting.

In Avira 10 advance protection, high heuristics, smart extensions, no recursion depth, no archives on Guard is the perfect configuration. The only thing missing is a sandbox. They discreetly limit heuristics and recursion on personal/free.

If I was in charge of development I'd focus on a sandbox or use the windows loader and do simulated runtime heuristics.

Also most AVs are actually weakened because users don't use proper security policies. You can even eliminate the need for a AV and still have the same flexibility using windows policy system. That's old info though, people are never going to exert themselves that much.
