Apple’s iMac line just got overhauled, with the 27-inch getting the biggest changes

Today, Apple announced changes to its iMac product line, with significant upgrades in the 27-inch model, a move to SSDs in the 21.5-inch model, and more performance at lower prices for the iMac Pro.

The 27-inch iMac still has a 5K display, and its chassis is the same. Those hoping for smaller bezels will be disappointed. That said, Apple is bringing TrueTone to this display, and it's offering the same NanoTexture tech we've seen in the company's Pro Display XDR as a $500 upgrade.

It's also getting 10th generation Comet Lake CPUs across all configurations, with 6- and 8-core CPUs standard. The top available CPU configuration is a 10-core Intel Core i9 with Turbo Boost up to 5GHz.

The new 27-inch iMac is equipped with AMD's new Radeon Pro 5000 series graphics.

The entire iMac line (including the 21.5-inch iMac, which otherwise has seen no changes today) has gone SSD storage only. Standard configurations offer 256GB or 512GB SSDs, and upgrades are available up to 8TB. Apple says these drives offer 3.4GB/s read/write speeds.
Also like the MacBook Pro (and just about every other Mac today), the 27-inch iMac now has the T2 security chip, which is used for the Secure Enclave and encrypted storage.

This morning, Apple took the wraps off the latest version of its 27-inch iMac. The changes are, notably, almost exclusively under the hood, but there are a number of key updates as it eyes its long-time bread and butter creative pro clients that it previously courted with the iMac Pro and Mac Pro.

Graphics, naturally, are getting a boost, as well, at up to 55% faster than previous models, courtesy of the AMD Radeon Pro 5000 series — similar to what’s currently found on the 16-inch version of the MacBook Pro. Meanwhile, 16GB RAM is now standard (up from the base 8GB). That’s configurable all the way up to a hart 128GB of DDR4.
SSD storage is finally standard across all iMacs, as well. Here the base is 256GB, configurable up to 8TB. The system also now sports the company’s proprietary T2 security chip, as well as an optional 10GB Ethernet connection.

Speaking of remote work, the webcam and mic system have been upgraded. The camera is 1080p, coupled with a similar microphone system as the one found in the 16-inch MacBook, feature two in the system’s “chin” and one in the back.

Apple has also noted that it will continue to support Intel Macs for “years to come,” though it’s easy to imagine plenty of folks simply holding off on an upgrade, unless their needs are more dire.

The 27-inch still starts at $1,799 and is available starting today. The iMac Pro, meanwhile, now features a 10-core processor (up from 8) as the default configuration, at the same price of $4,999, while the 21.5-inch line (which offer SSDs across the board as per the above) starts at $1,099.

New 27-Inch iMac's Storage Affixed to Logic Board, 4TB and 8TB Configurations Have Expansion Connector

Following a report from German blog iFun.de that claimed the new 27-inch iMac's flash storage is soldered to the logic board, MacRumors has obtained additional information in an internal document for Apple technicians.

In the document, Apple says that the flash storage is indeed affixed to the logic board and cannot be removed. However, for the 4TB and 8TB configurations, Apple says that a flash storage expansion board is attached to a connector on the logic board. In the 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB configurations, the expansion board and connector are not present.
Apple adds that the flash storage and logic board are paired together for hardware encryption, so data will be lost if the logic board is replaced.
