Apple v. Samsung verdict is in: $1 billion loss for Samsung

Sony and Samsung used to jointly run a company that produced the LCD screens. Only the cosmetics and the associated electronics (Sony Bravia, etc.) were different. I think this company doesn´t exist now, and Samsung is planning to exit the LCD screen business, which isn´t a "hot" business anymore.

Personally i just hope all this patent trolling from Apple make em get into big trouble . . .

 

If Apple gets into trouble, it'll be against others abusing their patents. Not with the law. Unfortunately, Apple used patent laws correctly as they are no matter how wrong they (the laws) are.

 

Hope this happens.

 

I followed the news reports on the trial as best as I could. From what I gathered, in my opinion, this wasn't entirely a fair trial. The judge seemed to me, rather biased in Apples favor.
Samsung evidently had evidence supporting their case that the judge refused to allow the jury to see. I believe it had to do with the comparisons between the two companies products. Apple showed early Samsung drawings that were early design ideas, which were never released in any production models. Samsung wasn't allowed to point this out. This occurred a few times, as far as I can recall. Smells bad to me.

 

Is there actually anything valid in Apple's case? I wonder.

I still think that, while some form of patent system could exist and encourage innovation, say with 5-10 years - which should be plenty - i still think that, a non existent patent system would serve society much better than what we have today.
And the law needs to be clear on what is not patentable, like software.

LOL!! Priceless, if you're the Federation, (or Samsung), all is not well in the Appleverse!

 

After decades of using Windows OS based PCs I was just beginning to warm up to the Apple eco-system after my Mac Mini purchase this year. But I like Samsung products and the advances (like with the Galaxy S series phones) that this competition brings. I remember when Apple went after MS for it's Windows GUI and the claim was that they were the first to invent its own type of point and click Mac GUI interface. From what I read the point and click GUI was used in UNIX long before Apple Macs and then MS Windows used it.

I was going to take a serious look at the upcoming iPhone 5 as an upgrade to my Android phone because of its easy integration with the Mac. I was also looking at integrating other Apple products on my home network like Apple TV. These recent events could change my previous plans. The reason I purchased a Mac Mini was because of the open flexibility of the platform while using an OS X VM application for other OS's. I can understand legitimate patent infringement claims for technological advances but if this particular ruling against Samsung stands and Apple doesn't loosen the lawsuit vice grip off everyone else's n*ts over the petty patent infringement issues like similar looking phone widgets and the rounded corners of the phone shell then it could be the end of any future Apple purchases for me.

I will now be seriously considering upgrading to the Galaxy S III or specifically to a Samsung brand smart phone if they are still legally available for U.S. sale in the coming months....and the upcoming MS Windows 8 platform is looking better to me than it did before (run in my Parallels for Mac VM). This ruling hasn't gone over well at all with many consumers and I wouldn't be surprised if the unspoken backlash from the rest of the non-Apple computer and networking industry makes this a much more serious issue in the long run for Apple than the benefit of a $1 billion judgement against Samsung. Apple product users in the near future..."Gee...I wonder why the updated drivers for my non-Apple networked device still haven't been released to support OS X, Macs and iPhones?"

 

And now Samsung are planning to sue Apple.

Apple may be royalty in the U.S. but Samsung has all kinds of ties in the developing Asian markets that Apple has been going out of it's way to make inroads into. You have to wonder what a patent infringement ruling favoring Samsung and against Apple would mean in regions and countries like Indonesia or China where most of Apple's products are manufactured. These Apple inflamed patent wars could get uglier for all corporations involved and hurt consumers worldwide. The smartest thing Apple could do is simply leverage this lawsuit win in the U.S. and force a long term lucrative settlement with Samsung for them to integrate Apple product functionality, Apple store and iTunes into all of their future devices sold world wide...Smart TVs, tablets, phones, etc.. Samsung may not want to play ball but continue with their appeals and world lawsuits for some leverage of their own. In the end both companies could put this war behind them by coming to an agreement and end up even stronger in the process.

You may already know that Apple licenses the name iOS from Cisco, but did you know that LG, one of Apple’s suppliers, had an iPad a full 9 years before Apple? According to an article published way back in 2001, LG showed off their Digital iPAD, ‘Linux-based Web pad,’ at the CeBIT computer fair in Hanover, Germany.

The device, which apparently never went to market, seems pretty pitiful by modern standards; boasting a 206Mhz Intel SA-1110 and requiring a stylus for input, it really couldn’t hold a candle to a budget-priced Polaroid tablet, let alone one of those other iPads. It did, however, offer expandability, thanks to a slot for Flash memory cards and PCMCIA cards, whatever the hell that is.

From the small photo included in the article, LG’s device looks pretty clunky, too. And despite the claim that the device would be released in Korea ‘within the next 12 months,’ if it ever went to market, we can’t find any references to prove it. It would take a few more years for technology to catch up and make tablets into the kind of amazing experience that people like Bill Gates were dreaming of back then.

There is one lingering question: why hasn't LG sued Apple over the iPad name, like certain others have? There's a couple of possibilities. One is that LG doesn't own any rights to the name, since they never actually took their product to market. The other is that Apple quietly licensed it from them. Or maybe LG just forgot about it, like everyone else.
