Apple, Amazon and Google unite to help create a universal smart home standard

Smart home devices are a godsend for the busy, the disorganized and the plain ol' lazy, but getting them up and running can still be a complicated pain [...] But now, three of the biggest names in smart home tech are working together to simplify matters.

Google, Amazon and Apple (plus others) have created Connected Home Over IP, a new working group managed by the Zigbee Alliance, which aims to develop a new, open smart home connectivity standard based on Internet Protocol (IP).
For consumers, this will mean that stuff just works together, but it'll be a boon for developers, too, as a universal standard streamlines product development and reduces costs by giving them a blueprint for their products.

The other Zigbee Alliance board member companies include IKEA, Samsung SmartThings and Signify (the new name for Philips Lighting). They're all on board to help develop the "royalty-free connectivity standard."
The group hasn't revealed any roadmaps or timelines, although major developments will be announced as and when they happen.

Sounds good to me, all of these devices should be able to work together, instead of having to mix and match. Not that I'm into smarthomes, but I'm planning to buy a new alarm system soon and you never know if you're going to add more devices.

The rollout of the first certifications for smart home standard Matter—formerly called "Project Connected Home over IP" or "CHIP"—has been delayed to 2022, according to a blog post from Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) CEO Tobin Richardson.

The Matter standard is backed by Apple, Google, Amazon, and many other big players in the smart home industry. Among other things, it sought to make sure that devices from disparate companies using differing technologies (like Wi-Fi or Zigbee) could reliably work together in some way or another.

We went over the specifics of the technologies used in the standard when it was first announced in 2019. It was previously slated to arrive before the end of 2021. This isn't the first time the standard has been delayed, however; it was originally planned for late 2020.

Richardson wrote that Matter has a feature-complete specification, "which means the final feature set and supported use cases have been ratified by the Matter Working Group" and that there are now more than 200 companies committed to the standard. The next phase is "building out device type support, testing, refining, and of course SDK development."
But he went on to write that the SDK will now be arriving in 1H 2022 instead of 2H 2021:
