The trend seems to be moving to Solid State Drives, especially with their falling prices and HDD prices remaining high. However, SSDs have a limited number of reads and writes, so with an antivirus reading files all the time, would using an antivirus with a SSD shorten its life in any noticeable way?

IMHO Write endurance is not something you should be worried about with the current trend in SSD technology.

^ this. wear leveling algorithms have come a long way since SSDs were first introduced. lots of complex stuff goes on w/the drive controllers to ensure durability.

Reading files should cause almost no wear at all. As the others have stated it really should not be an issue. Your SSD will likely become obsolete before you burn it up. Buy a good good brand with a good warranty and make regular backups as you should with any drive and you will never have a problem you can't fix.

Writing is what causes wear on SSD's. Meaning antiviruses that churn out massive logs (i remember Kaspersky making several GB of data in a very short time just with logs), caching technologies etc, stuff like this makes wear on SSD's. But even with this i think SSD would become too small for the usage over time so you'd probably replace it before the over-wear happens.

They are already working on non-volatile memory modules that have far higher (liek 10.000 times higher) endurance or no wear at all. But the no wear versions are still pretty far away...

Kaspersky has a way of causing gigantic writes on the SSD if you have many large archives on your drives and do a full system scan. These archives are unpacked during scanning, and by default it is on the same drive Kaspersky is installed (usually the SSD), which can mean hundreds of GB written in a very short time.

    500GB Hard Drive : 4800 INR :doubt:
    64GB SSD Drive : 4600 INR :cautious:

Which trend is moving towards SSD you are talking about?? (Maybe the rich one)
Am I going to see 64GB for like 1000 INR in 2-3 years? I don't think so!!
My XP partion is bigger than an SSD Drive!!
95% of the people use them just to boot their OS!!
For me it will make a good Pen Drive alternative!! Nothing Else!!

    Now about your question :
As everybody said reading files should not be problem for an SSD Drive. Actually an AV will perform much lighter and better than Mechanical Hard Drives IMO!
