Is there a way to backup a WinXP system and restore it on a sata disk running in IDE mode if the backup via Acronis True Image 11 was done with a disk in AHCI mode? Just trying to avoid a complete reinstall if I want to put my boot disk back into IDE mode...

    Thanks for any advice.

AHCI describes the communication between the SATA contoller and software.
'Software' means that a driverprogram is neccessary.
Therefore is an AHCI-driver installed and it is activated in your OS.

If you backup and restore an image there is no change concerning the driver. It is in the image and active furthermore.

This situation is the same like without a backup/restore. Switch your SATA-HD from AHCI to IDE now and you see what happens.

    Either it works or not.

If not, a windows repair installation can help (with the original OS-Windows CD).

Sounds like a repair install is the way to go and worth trying. I'll restore a backup on another drive and test with that to see how well it works.

    Thanks,
