It’s one thing to be able to get everything delivered to your doorstep, it’s another to then have to actually have to leave your home, brace the elements and return those things that just didn’t work out (or work at all). Typically, that means a run to your local FedEx or UPS store. For the last two years, Amazon and department store chain Kohl’s had a limited partnership that allowed you to bring your return to 100 Kohl’s stores across the country. Today, the two companies announced that they’d expand this program to all 1,150 Kohl’s locations in the U.S.

Amazon partners with retailers for new Counter package pickup service, starting with Rite-Aid

The new service, Counter, turns physical retail locations into package pickup centers, giving customers another delivery option for their Amazon orders at no extra charge. It went live today in more than 100 Rite Aid stores and will reach 1,500 locations by the end of the year. Amazon plans to ink deals with other businesses and chains. It’s under the Amazon Hub umbrella, which also includes Amazon Lockers for picking up packages.

Just in time for Prime Day shopping sprees and back-to-school shopping, Kohl’s announced Monday that its more than 1,100 stores nationwide now accept Amazon returns.

“We're thrilled to offer this first-of-its-kind service to Amazon and Kohl's customers," Gass said in a statement to USA TODAY. "We believe customers will appreciate this easy and convenient new service, bringing them to our stores more often and deepening customer loyalty for both Amazon and Kohl's."
Kohl's announced in April the returns program would expand this summer after piloting it in 100 stores in Chicago, Los Angeles and Milwaukee markets.

Amazon is now accepting returns on purchases made online in its some of its Amazon Go stores, Business Insider has learned.
To make a return, Amazon customers select the product they'd like to return in the Amazon app and select an Amazon Go store. It's free and doesn't require any packaging or boxes.

Amazon accepts returns in its 19 Amazon Books locations and three Amazon 4-star stores. Amazon Hub Lockers and Kohl's 1,150-plus locations also accept returns. But as recently as June 2019, Amazon Go stores, which opened publicly in early 2018, couldn't process returns.
Not all of the 15 cashierless stores — which are in Seattle, Chicago, San Francisco, and New York City — are accepting returns.

Returns are cheaper for retailers when made in stores. According to AlixPartners, the returns process costs retailers $3 per package when customers return them to a store.

Amazon expands free return policy to ‘millions of items’

Amazon is expanding its free return policy to include millions of products not previously eligible, including electronics, household items, and kitchen appliances. The products must be sold and fulfilled by Amazon, and they must weigh under 50 pounds.

For the holiday season, the new policy kicks in retroactively, so it applies to any products purchased on Amazon starting November 1st and remains active for any product purchased up until December 31st. Customers will have until January 31st to return a product delivered in that time frame for free. Amazon says you can return an eligible item for any reason whatsoever and get a full refund.
Before today, Amazon only allowed free returns on clothing, apparel, and bedding. Customers could get full refunds on orders if the item was defective or something was wrong with the delivery.

But this new change means Amazon now offers at least one no-questions-asked free return, meaning all costs covered, on a whole slate of new products, ones Amazon knows are quite popular during the holidays.

“With free returns on millions of items, customers don’t need to worry if the keyboard they ordered doesn’t feel quite right or if their dog likes his new bed — they can buy with confidence, knowing they’ll be able to return it for free with just a few easy clicks.”

Every single day this December, an estimated 1 million return packages were picked up through UPS alone, and online shoppers are expected to send back even more purchases this holiday season.
Many of the discarded items head to a landfill. The environmental problem is only getting worse as e-commerce grows and free returns become the expected norm for shopping online.

“People need to be aware that there are environmental consequences of sending back their returns. You know, they don’t just go into thin air and disappear,” says Sharon Cullinane, a professor at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.
Retailers might send things back to the manufacturer that they can’t put up for sale again, or they might try to unload it to other companies who sell it at deep discounts.

Even if something was in good condition when the buyer put it in the mailbox, shipping it back can damage the item. Sometimes retailers realize that throwing out a returned item is the most cost-effective way to deal with the thing [...]
