I know this is not a Yahoo! forum, but I am at my wits end on an error I made before logging into a remote computer to perform needed work and maintenance, and we all know that in essence there is no real support at Yahoo.com for problems encountered. However, in the event anyone knows a living, breathing techie at Yahoo! can you point them to this thread in the event no one can help here? Please?!

    The problem:

Before logging into the remote computer, I had the remote run several different scans to establish they were not infected with any malware. HijackThis is always an essential element in those scans. What possessed me, I do not know, but I had the remote user "Fix" the below O16 entries (webscan.cab and ymmapi_416.dll) in their HT log:

    O16 - DPF: {7B297BFD-85E4-4092-B2AF-16A91B2EA103} (WScanCtl Class) -
    ht*tp://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/webscan.cab

    O16 - DPF: {A17E30C4-A9BA-11D4-8673-60DB54C10000} (YahooYMailTo Class) -
    ht*tp://us.dl1.yimg.com/download.yahoo.com/dl/installs/yse/ymmapi_416.dll

What I did not know (I never use any toolbars and never encountered this problem before) is that after they "Fixed" the above files, they lost a direct link to their Yahoo!Mail account which sat happily on their desktop for approximately three years. This link is NOT a shortcut to the Yahoo! login page, but would take the user directly to their Yahoo!Mail Inbox.

The first thing I tried after entering the remote PC was to rescue the above "Fixes" from the HijackThis backup files. It did not work.

I tried downloading the .cab and .dll directly from the above O16 links (added an * to avoid accidental downloads in the above links) back into the remote PC. That did not work. However, one of those links will change IE's encoding in anyone's browser who clicks on them so please do not click! :)

I tried saving the .cab and .dll and installing them manually back into the PC. That did not work.

I tried gently moving the .cab and .dll into the appropriate folders on the remote PC, and you guessed correctly if you guessed, "That did not work."

I was able to locate the original yessent.exe (V.2004.4.14.1) in D:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Installs\yessent.exe, but when the remote user attempts to install the yessent.exe, the user receives a message that a newer version of Yahoo!Toolbar is available for download and they can not install the old.

My last session on the remote PC is tomorrow, and I am out of options to regain this direct Yahoo!Mail link for the remote user. I feel very bad about this, the remote user is of course annoyed, and although I accomplished a good deal of work on the remote PC, this little annoyance is overshadowing all the good work, and I really need to figure something out.

If anyone out there can help me on this, I will be forever indebted.

    Thank you,
    CS

    The remote PC's specs:
    Win2K SP4 (WinNT 5.00.2195)
    IE v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106)
    NAV 2002
    BOClean
and ZoneAlarm (don't remember which version)

  2. Hello CrystalSky, :)

I know this doesn't address your attempt at a repair directly, but you mention .... "when the remote user attempts to install the yessent.exe, the user receives a message that a newer version of Yahoo!Toolbar is available for download and they can not install the old."

Then how about this version from Lockergnome's November 2001 GnomeREPORT, offered as a direct download here ....

Sorry I couldn't confirm the actual version not posting from my machine.

  3. Now from *MY* machine  ....

don't know if this will help or not, the version list's itself as 2003.2.19.1 My guess it can't be re-installed most likely relates to updated Yahoo files. Which one's .... I've not the slightest. Wish I had some answer's Crystal, sorry not to provide more.
