I start using it few months ago but I would like to have your opinon about it.
I feel it adds some security but I would like more information before I pay for it, positive or negative. I emailed the author to make some suggestions in the past and he wants to improve it. The main idea of it is good but needs some improvement I think.

The program is the whole complement to your virus scanner. The great advantage is, that WinHKI Anti-Virus checks the background of Windows whether there are suspicious modifications.

->finds with the system check new still unknown viruses, worms and trojans
    -> you don't need a virus database
-> it checks the complete system for suspicious modifications
-> whole complement to your virus scanner
-> extremely fast, you only need about 0,4 MB on the hard disk
-> works completely selfcontinuously in the background and announces suspicious files

    Thanks a lot !!!

its not necessarily an antivirus. its a data integrity checker. what it does is calculate the checksums of certains files then when u scan ur computer it will let u know if any of teh files have changed or been modified.

    Yes I know

Are there any alternatives ? Freeware or Shareware.
I mean a checksum calculator running continuously (or at fixed intervals) in the background ?
Most of those are on-demand only, am I wrong ?

    Thanks

    Hi AGAGA,

Here's a very good site with quite a few listed, Free and Paid. Realtime operation is mentioned too. You might like to submit WinHKI for him to test it. He's very honest and fair with his assessments, and it could be good publicity for you.

I would like to encourage you to continue evolving this useful looking App. I noticed in your webpages that you announced some further upcoming features/improvements due shortly, which sound worthwhile.

As most of us havn't heard of you or your Apps, there is a natural hesitation amongst some to install or buy. After checking your forums, and reading what you posted on here before, i'm still not too sure about it's status.

If we download it, are we able to try it out for Free, 30 days would be good to test it properly. I don't see any clear information regarding any of this anywhere. I did see this though.

"But we include only nag screens and include shareware information."

Is that before purchase, and/or afterwards ?

Also what OS's does it run on ?

    Thanks

    Hi

First, I would like to mention that I'm not behind that software in any matter and I'm not promoting it with this post.

So far, I didn't have any problem with software. But as it turned shareware recently (no nags during the 30 days trial, fully fonctionning after with nags) I asked myself if I should pay for it. Does it worth it ? Are its features unique ? I didn't see something like that before ( run in real time).
As I can see, there is not a lot of user or ex-user here, but I'll wait...

Thanks, I will look at the software links you provided.

@WSFuser -- Great links! I am wary of your #3 program (Integrity Checker) because no disclosure is made of what kind of checksum it uses.

Another couple of free Integrity Checkers (I use them both) are...
Fingerprint It's VERY configurable. Uses MD5 checksum. On-demand plus scheduleable.
Watcher. It's super light on resources, & runs extremely fast. Not configurable. Checksum algorithm is undisclosed so it's probably CRC. Start-up &/or on-demand.

I e-mailed the author of WinHKI AV to ask him what checksum his app uses but he wouldn't be specific in his reply. Is this a cause for concern? Anyway I've been using V.1.24 for about a year now (still free and available). V1.31 is too cpu intensive for me. I've not had any problems with it and it seems to work: it detects all changes and offers an option to remove the changed or added file. I think its a really good idea to have a checksum calculator running 'resident'. I've tried most of the apps mentioned here and a few others besides. the only one similar to WinHKI was FileChangeAlarm, which seemed a bit flakey probably because it was a beta. I wish there were more 'real-time' checksum calculators out there! I know gerardwil tried out WinHKI https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=53496&highlight=WinHKI
Perhaps he could post here with an opinion?

    Sentinel is very good "out-of-the-box".

If you have a pretty solid knowledge of the sensitive areas of your computer, Fingerprint lets you configure to your heart's content.

As to Dog's comment that IC uses SHA1 -- AFAIK, SHA1 is one of the very best checksum algorithms.

However, be aware that on-demand integrity checkers pretty much give you the bad news AFTER the barn door has already remained *open* for a while. For a real-time guard dog, you might want to take a look at NON-free "application firewalls" such as Process Guard or ApplicationDefend -- both of which have forums here at Wilders. Or you might consider a good "HIPS" such as OnlineArmor.

    I agree with Bellgamin.

It gives you the bad news AFTER the barn door is opened.
But for those who can't afford paid software, the freeware version can be helpfull, but I don't want to use too much memory for it. I have peaks at 25 % CPU when it verifies the checksum, it's too much for me. But it's always good to know what's happen...
It would be good to select the folders-files we want to check.
Another suggestion : kill the process if it's running.
With little improvments and less memory usage, I would consider paying for it, maybe. Lets see where it goes...

Indeed - in a layered security model, the more layers the better. Where you can increase your security with virtually no resource usage, that has to be useful.
