I have Win 7 64bit and am wondering if the built-in firewall is any good at blocking outbound connections?

I am also looking into the PCtools free firewall as a possible alternative to 7's built-in firewall.

Which one would be better at blocking outbound connections and is easier to use?

I have used PCtools firewall in the past and did find it very light running and fairly easy to use. But am uncertain if the latest version would run as well on 64bit version of Win 7.

Other recommendations of good solid light running firewalls, without too much of a HIPS aspect to it, would be welcome also, provided they are Win 7 64bit compatible. Also will be running on a limited account.

    Thanks.

Yes, the Win 7 32bit & 64bit is very good built-in firewall at blocking outbound connections

If you are a Prodigy user they provide for free PCtools Suite, I will not recommend it

    Win 7 32bit & 64bit is built-in firewall for me

Outpost Firewall Pro latest version 7.1

The firewall found in Windows 7 is excellent, however, by default it allows all outbound communication. If you're comfortable creating rules manually, it would be a good choice. See here for details:

Windows Firewall with Advanced Security (Guide for Vista)

I tried PCTools firewall a while ago, it had some nice features but it also had some serious quirks. It would certainly be easier to configure, if you're unfamiliar with manual rule creation.

A number of people here would probably promote Private Firewall Private Firewall Updated (again) Personally, I can't stand the interface but I don't doubt it's efficacy.

As mentioned in the post above this, Outpost is another option as is Comodo

PC Tools Firewall Plus = Windows Firewall with an easier to use GUI + a light HIPS
